Where did hoppers character go lol

And if you can't find the workprint, here's what happened to him:

He took Kurtz's picture, so Kurtz sent Colby to kill him. Colby shot him with a shotgun, and then Willard killed Colby.

I always wondered that too. It seemed odd that Dennis Hopper pretty much worshiped Kurtz like all the locals did, yet Kurtz throwing a book at him and calling him a mutt was what caused him to split even though Kurtz is extremely violent and threatened to kill Hopper before.

Not only that, but Kurtz's compound was in the middle of Cambodia with plenty of VC running around, and the only way back was upriver. If Hopper decided to hoof it back to civilization or at least somewhere friendly, he'd have a hell of a hike and personally I don't see him making it out alive by himself.

Some others have posted that there was originally a scene where Colby, the rogue special forces guy who joined Kurtz's group was ordered to kill Hopper by Kurtz because Hopper took his picture, and that Willard killed him in retaliation.

To me that makes the most sense since even though we see some other American defectors at Kurtz's compound, Colby was the only one who we know was special forces, was ordered to kill him yet turned coat, and not only defected but was so devoted that he asked his wife to sell everything (including their own children) and to forget him. Colby seems like one of those followers who becomes more devoted to someone than anyone else, that if Kurtz died Colby would go apesh!t.

Even without the whole Hopper disappearance, I still wondered about Colby when I first saw the film. They make a point to show Colby's gone crazy, then they show him again to reinforce that Colby's joined Kurtz, and yet when Willard kills Kurtz we don't see Colby again. I figured Willard would've had to kill Colby afterwards or something.

Can't be too careful with all those weirdos running around.
