i saw this was one of the best movies ever on imdb so i gave it a watch, boy did it disappoint me and was boring! i was like what is this? what are they doing and what is going on? there was really nothing that looked interesting or anything i cared to know. i mean, what a boring ass movie, almost made me fall asleep! i guess if your an old man and into war movies and such this is for you.

"Nothing that looked interesting"
Seriously? Did you have your eyes in backwards? What films do you like?

reply

You gotta watch it more than once, I've been watching it for years and there are still things that I pick up on. Also I would avoid the Redux version, all it really does is slow down the film and it adds next to nothing.

It'll be interesting to see if the Final Cut is the best version however.

I just saw the final cut yesterday at the IMAX and it is definitely the kind of movie that I would need to watch a few times to fully comprehend. I had never seen it before and really knew nothing about the story except for Robert Duvall’s line about the “smell of napalm in the morning” so I jumped at the chance to see it at the IMAX.

reply

How different was it from the Redux?

reply

I have never seen the original or redux. I think the running length is longer than the original but shorter than the redux. I think they might have changed the order of a few scenes. I’m under the impression that the ending is slightly different.

It will be playing at select IMAX theaters for one more day

What kind of idiot calls art boring and imagine it makes them smart? This film is way over your head I guess, an absolute masterpiece.

What's wrong..... wasn't Michael Bay enough for you?

acriser15 You're probably way too young for it.

reply

He's right it is boring. I watched some 176 minute version but I can't find documentation of any version that claims to be that long. But even cutting out some of the dragging scenes what's left doesn't really become any more interesting

The original was decently paced. It isn't supposed to be an actioner. It helps to know the theme of the book it was based upon which is the supposed question of whether the civilized world is actually any different than the life of supposed ' savages' .

Basically, a man going is up the Congo river to find a renegade trader colonist, also named Kurtz, who has gone 'native' or mad all the while the protagonist is going insane himself the further up the river he travels. Kurtz has actually found the uncivilized native world more palatable than the civilized world he abandoned so there is a question of if he is really insane or not.

The river represents the unravelling of sanity the further one travels up it. Basically a giant metaphor.

I actually wholly agree with your sentiments.
The problem you've encountered is that you've watched this as a war movie.
It is NOT a war movie. War just happens to be part of it and Central to its core.
I'm watching it now, I'm finding it quite dull.
However I'm watching it as an action war movie, think band of brothers, just like I suspect you did.

You really have to watch this movie like lost in translation, or how you read an Ernest Hemingway book. You have to watch the parts that aren't there and you have to think about it.

You can't just sit there and enjoy it, to you have to take enjoyment from it, it doesn't spoon feed you.

To me, this is the type of movie that I class as "wanky" you have to be a certain type of person to fully appreciate the movie, you have to be the type of person that lists "movies" as part of their dating profile or enjoyed, lost in translation (for me nothing happened, the end). You'll probably like the smiths and joy Division as part of your music arsenal. You don't want to be entertained by the movie, you want the movie to trigger you into thinking about the movie and what it means and what it's trying to say.

You like me, are the terminator, Predator, running Man type movie person.
There people that appreciate this type of movie are the lost in translation, "must make me think" type person.
