Streaming now on Netflix and Amazon

Just saw this recently and it was wonderful. James Woods, Sally Strouthers, and Jonah (played by actually deaf Jeffrey Bravin, his only film) were incredible as a stressed family. Very believable. Highly recommended

Wow, what a coincidence! You just posted this message and I just got done watching this movie on Netflix! I agree with you. This movie is very believable. I really enjoyed it. I think a lot of the shots of spots in NY, like it's skyline were great additions! I really loved this movie.
It makes me want to learn more about the deaf community than what little I did know. I'm of hearing. After watching this movie, I think I know a lot more about the deaf than I did before.

It was very sad when the grandfather passed. I was happy when the mother approached the deaf family to speak with them. She opened a door to beautiful possibilities for her and her family! It was so great seeing the youngest brother interested in sign language when Jonah was being taught by the other guy.
This movie really warmed my heart!!

I've been waiting for this movie on VHS or DVD (or streaming) for years and am so glad it's available on Netflix now. I saw it when it first was on in 1979 and it's what got me interested in sign language.

Watching it again in 2013 made me mad at his aural school. Thank God that attitude is now gone for the most part. People should be allowed to be communcative in whatever manner makes it best for them to actually communicate. Not every deaf person is a Helen Keller.

I do remember seeing this as a kid, from almost 40 years ago. It was torture because it was so sad. I still remember parts of it. The mom's frustration ("IT'S NOT MY FAULT") was understandable.

Don't be angry at Jonah's school. :) People then were equipped only with what they knew. Be happy our lives are so much more comfortable, even by 1979's standards.
