What a dud! Poorly written, poor direction and with some truly awful acting (especially Brolin and Steiger), this is not the least bit scary or even mildly creepy and does not deserve any fame whatsoever. The only reason this did well is because of the whole bogus "true story" angle that made the book a best seller.

Did you ever notice how much money the film and book made? It was from the 1970's.

The success is why there were so many spin offs on this subject, and why another film is coming out.

I always found it pretty creepy for a movie with hardly any special effects. If you can't be safe in your own home, where can you?

Agree with OP. It's absolutely terrible and way over rated. The Exorcist was made 6 years earlier, and way better.
