The Credits

When they zip Gideon up and then the credits immediately roll to "...by Bob Fosse" it is SO funny. The movie is directly about him! Just an insanely egotistical move to explore his own hubristic unrepentant death at length. It tempers the darkness of the preceding two hours a lot. A big hammy wink to the audience. "I'm dead, haha get it? Feelin' bad for me? What did you just sit through?"

Well I suppose that's one way of looking at it. Some might also see it as a fascinating, imaginative and intimately autobiographical musical.

A semi-autobiographical work like "All That Jazz" always runs the risk of being
perceived as self indulgent. But Fosse is brutally honest about his weaknesses.
Having the film end with Gideon's death indicates his awareness that his life-style
will lead to his death some day. And it did.
