Best part, the three, young French women

I think that's my favorite part of the movie. Paul Baumer and his friends are taking a much overdue bath in a French river when they spot three, young French women out for an afternoon stroll along the riverbank. As it is all over the world, men and women find a way to communicate despite different languages. The three French gals are jovial and friendly. Oddly they have no fear of the naked German soldiers beckoning them. Someone they all strike an agreement-despite neither understanding the other-to meet up at the farmhouse where the women reside, as long as the German men bring food.

After getting the fourth member of their group inebriated and asleep, the three 'winners' make their way over to the French farmhouse, across the river, storing the promised food in their tall boots. The French gals eagerly greet their virile, German visitors, despite their respective countries being at war. The guys are naked, wrapped in army wool blankets. Everyone sits down at the dinner table and the delighted French girls dig into the sausages and bread. Despite their enthusiastic dining, the girls only eat for less than 30 seconds. One by one, each French woman stands up and takes a German young off to a bedroom. Paul is last. He is shy and embarrassed and respectful. His modest shyness is attractive to the remaining French girl, who futilely attempts a conversation with Paul because of the language barrier. At length she gets up and leads Paul away to her bedroom.

The three, young French women are hard to judge in age. I have the hunch that the three women looked older than their real age. But all appear to be slightly older than the three German soldiers. So the three French gals could be in their early to mid-twenties. None of them are raving beauties, perhaps a 7 out of 10 at best, but all are slim, healthy, and eager.

It seems the French gals were hungrier than I thought but in a different way.

None of them are raving beauties? Gotta disagree with you on that part friend. The French woman who sleeps with Paul was a total knockout! IMHO of course. Very pretty face with super nice eyes. I can't help but envy Paul every time the film gets to that scene.

She was a total 10 for me. (:

What spoke to me is how well the scene portrayed that both the German soldiers and the French women (even though their countries were enemies), were just looking for some beauty and human connection amidst the chaos of war. The scene is awkward, funny, touching, and intensely beautiful.
