I don't think so. There is a novel from the thirties with that title, but I don't think this film has anything to do with it. Italians were notorious for ripping off popular Hollywood films in the 70's and 80's as unofficial "sequels". I think the makers of this film intended to make one of these "sequels", but ended up being sued by 20th Century Fox. I think they just used the 30's book as a way to try and win the lawsuit. it must have worked, as they won!
