FX Boss John Landgraf made official what has been out there for some time: The cable network is moving quickly to make a series based on the hit 20th Century Fox movie series Alien with Fargo and Legion creator Noah Hawley stepping into the creator and EP chair with the network in advance talks with the franchise’s helmer Ridley Scott to join as EP. Landgraf announced the news about the Alien series today during Disney Investor Day.

The series is billed as being the first Alien story set on Earth, and will blend the timeless horror of the original 1979 movie and the non-stop action of the 1986 James Cameron-directed second.

When we recently spoke to Hawley for the Fargo season 4 finale around Thanksgiving, he admitted, “he wasn’t committed” to the series (yet), but had been in conversations about the Alien series development.

It’d be mindblowing if Scott directed an episode or two, and wouldn’t be shocking given how he directed two episodes recently the HBO Max (and very Alien toned) sci-fi series that he produced, Raised by Wolves.

He refuses point blank to tell me anything about Gladiator 2 – “No! No!” he cries– but he’s more vocal about the Alien franchise, which he resurrected with 2012’s origin story Prometheus. “I never showed an alien in it” – it still made $404 million at the box office – “and the studio … said, ‘See, it didn’t do so well!’ Really?” He returned with 2017’s Alien: Covenant, “put the aliens back in there”, and the film made much less: $240m worldwide. “When you’ve got a marvellous beast, it does wear out and you have to actually think again.”

The franchise is now being rebooted as a TV series by Noah Hawley (who successfully turned Fargo into a long-running show). Wherever they go, whatever they do, “It’ll never be as good as the first one,” he grins. “That’s what I’ll say.” Our time is almost nigh, but not before conversation turns to the fate of the big screen versus streaming platforms. Scott, wisely, recognises that some movies work well on Netflix et al. But he’s a big-screen director. Always has been. “The film is gonna be more powerful in cinema. It should never go away. It should not be allowed to go away.”

Jesus Christ, I really hope he doesn't mean any of this, because honestly it's bafflingly idiotic. The reason Alien: Covenant made less money than Pro was because it had more aliens in it? I would totally rip this argument into pieces if I encounter it on a random movie message board but the director of the 1979 Alien seriously says this with a straight face? What the actual fuck?

It's official, folks. Ridley completely lost it... I'm just... I can't...

Wherever they go, whatever they do, “It’ll never be as good as the first one,” he grins.

Umm... he's somewhat got a pont there, but he really should look at the way TV-series progressed from let's say the beginning of the 90s to now. A series has way longer runtime than a movie, thus it has more opportunities for world building and characterization. More not always equals better, that's for sure - there are just as many crap series than crap movies, and brilliant series are just as rare as brilliant movies. But a well written and executed Alien series could aim to give the viewer a different experience than the first movie. Not necessarily better, but I would be happy if it was well written and different enough to give a completely new experience.

Promising, but I would not let him direct any of the episodes

Bullshit. Raised by Wolves was not "Alien-toned". It was "post 2012 Ridley Scott-toned". As Pro and A:C clearly showed, Scott completely lost the connection to the first Alien movie, and thus, with the franchise as a whole. So no, please don't let him get involved.
