Often misquoted line, even in subtitles (spoiler):

After Brett gets snatched up in to the duct and the group is discussing it in the mess hall, Lambert asks a line which is kind of hard to understand, and Ripley even asks Lambert to repeat it, but when she does she asks something slightly different:

Lambert: Could it want Brett alive?
Ripley: What?
Lambert: Could Brett be alive?
Ripley: No... I-I don't think so.

"You mean -- all this time ... we could have been friends....?"

It is hard to hear. The line I always had the most trouble with was after Parker says that this thing is huge, like a man, Ash says, "Kane's son."

I always thought he said, "Kane saw." As in Kane saw it. I couldn't figure out what he meant because he was dead when the chestburster finally broke through.

Also Parker is so shaken and practically whispering when he says, "No doubt it's using the air ducts to move around."
I thought he was saying "the end ducts". I thought that was some special part of the ship.

I always thought the sound editing failed in the scene involving Ripley, Brett, and Parker in the engine room. When they started whining to her about getting an equal amount of pay, Ripley bolts back "Don't worry Parker, you'll get....coming to you" but it seems like she said a mouthful inbetween that cut but Scott or the editor took it out.

That scene is also hard to hear with all the background noise. I could barely make out that she says, "Yeah you get what's coming to you." But it's garbled.
Of course you CAN hear her yell at Parker, "Why don't you just f@#% off!" That came through loud and clear. ha!

Sometimes I think that some of the dialogue was deliberately garbled or hard to hear. The crew was totally in the dark about what they were facing, and the hard to hear dialogue kept the audience uneasy too.

Remember when Ripley, Parker and Brett go through the door which sweeps open?
The tracker should have beeped because it was being held in front of a moving object.

Ripley mutters under her breath, "Micro changes in air density my a@@!"

It took me many viewings to hear that line. It makes me think that Ash deliberately sent them out there with trackers that really didn't work too well. After all the last thing he wanted was the crew to actually FIND the alien and "zap it into space".

I thought the sound editing was pretty ropey all the way through. Parker especially didnt seem to standd near a mic very often.

He says 'Kingsome' right, as an allusion to both its size and a brief insight into him admiring it?

reply

If you are referring to Ash, I think he said, "Kane's son". It was a strange way of saying that Kane basically "gave birth" to the alien.

It's very hard to hear. But that's what I read somewhere.

You're right. I actually never noticed that until I read the subtitles on the Blu Ray rip that I have, which got the dialog right. In a well-known deleted scene Ripley stumbled on a cocooned Dallas, who begged her to kill him. I think she saw Brett too, but it wasn't clear if he was still alive. Lambert's first instinct was probably correct.
