Message boards

Well, that's the end of that then!

So long fellow "Alien" fans - also fans of A2 and A3... A:R fans as well I guess;) - I'm posting this here as it seems to be my primary goto page on imdb and have shared in several of the big discussions over the past few years. So to those I've commented alongside, argued with, joked with... cgsailor, ttaskmaster, smfzone, wear-alan, picnic10, smashingtesticles, dwayne pipes, crazyivanova... and f?ck loads of others - cheers for the fun guys!

Oh and f?ck you lrdcharlton you jizz-gobbling f?ck-stick of a cock womble. :)

I guess this is a case of wanting what we know we can't have. I never posted all that much on these boards but knowing that, very soon, I won't be able to makes me feel some kind of way about it. Thanks for remembering me in such good company.

I guess I'll be off to Reddit now.

You're very welcome :)

Honestly, it really surprised me that you even remembered me at all. I rarely post on these boards partly because sometimes I get no replies at all so I was really flattered by the mention.

What CG says below! You stood out enough - for me at least!

Take care and if you see anyone posting under bluersun or cobalt blue elsewhere it's possibly/probably me so...! :)

Oh god! I think I really am going to cry now! 

I never posted all that much on these boards but...

... You posted enough to be recognized as a regular valued contributer.

Unlike lrdcharlton, and certain others.

And across multiple boards. (I know you from Red October as well)

I wont miss the total trolls like the aforementioned, Daddy_tej and his cast of dozens of hana sockpuppets, and plenty of others.

But I will miss the detailed discussions on these boards, not to mention the detailed historical talks over on Tora Tora Tora, or scientific principles and orbital mechanics on Gravity, and just military tech in general on Red October and others.

I know that I have been a real ball breaker to certain unthinking posters, trolls, and conspiracy nutjobs. I'll never apologize for that. Over the years I have gotten a number of thank yous in PM for putting some armchair subject matter expert in his place. Ita helped bolster me through periods where others have misunderstood my intent and gone on a rampage against me, totally mistaken my intentions.

Yes SFMZone... I'm a talkin about you, and ttaskmaster...lol. Those flame wars were the worst because you werent the trolls I attack. But we came around.

And sadly... We wont be having Luke around orgasming at all things James Cameron.

To all of you who made the boards what they are. You Bluersun, Wears-Alan, and all the rest too numerous to list...

Hand Salute....

... Two.

Carry on.

Hi, Sailor, come here often? (I've always wanted to say that lol!)

Yes there were a lot of trolls on these boards. One in particular drove me away from the Terminator board a few years ago. There was another one on the Star Trek boards that gave me the creeps so much I never posted there at all, only lurked. I've learned over the course of my time here that trolls are a part of almost any online community. I try to be careful. For as much as I say I have a thick skin, I really don't.

Yes I remember our exchange from the Red October board. What was it, last year? That was a lot of fun. I want to confess something to you. I was actually a little afraid of you then. After having it out with that one guy on the Terminator board (I think WearsAlan may remember the guy I'm talking about) I stayed off the boards for a long time. Speaking with you on Red October kind of drew me back out of my shell a little. Thanks for that.

I was never in the military so I don't know if it's proper for me to return your salute so let me offer a handshake instead. 

reply

igetitfaster? Oh no, I had some fun at his expense once. He was always picking apart others' posts. It amused me to give it right back to him. I remember my reply really shut him up on that thread. He probably didn't like me but he didn't bother me.

No, the guy I'm talking about wrote gigantic walls of text which he used to push his odd worldview. When I called him on his bizarre ideas, he proceeded to call me names and was just generally unpleasant. I'm no "social justice warrior" by any stretch but even I found him really offensive. Thankfully I haven't seen him on these boards in a fairly long time.

You're welcome, the guy was a dick head. He thought he was the be all and end all and couldn't accept anybody questioning his ideas. A self obsessed idiot who thought he was THE authority on the board.

Cheers CG I don't think we ever butted heads, as I know many have with you... I read the Alien boards for a long time before posting and had gotten the feel of most of the regulars on here by the time I committed my first reply, whether it was to you or not I really don't remember, however I do remember seeing an email notifying me that for the first time (in many) "CGSailor has replied to your post..." and for a moment I was hesitant on reading your reply - again, it's been far too long to remember what it was all about, but it must have been an agreeable reply as I think a jarring response from you would have definitely been... Memorable! :)

Hello !

Alien was always the first message board i visited when logging on to IMDB. Some of the best discussions I had on this board.

I'm just on my way up to Clavius.

reply

Well that's the first time anyone's mentioned my name as a shoutout so that's pleasing. I think IMDB are just corporatising themselves. Every major database is an arm of Facebook or Amazon or Snapchat or wherever the latest youth sucking platform is. I won't be using Facebook. This decision will be all about making advertising revenue and/or save on staff wages. As a British person, it took until the internet to experience the cold, dead, claw of advertising where 'moms are making 20 dollars an hour at home' where I live even though we don't call them moms or use dollars here.

Thank you IMDB for reminding me that whatever life is imagined to exist online is not the real life, even if we'd want it to be. Most supportful discourse still only supports who were comfortable with at the age of about 11. We are not largely a logical people ,nor even an emotional people , because we feel our defeats far more viciously than we enjoy our victories. Any time a bird could drop a tortoise on our head killing us so how do we win? Even the most talented people are often known by next to nobody. The doleful, silent, tortoise will often boringly outlive the most exciting people if only because , after a while, some of the exciting people, often mistakenly , assume that a silent person must be someone where still waters run deep, rather than the dry deep well of resentment and cynical opportunism that they often are.

Hate IS stronger than love in terms of how frequently it occurs and its hold on the world because hate can be active OR passive whereas love never feels passive. Remote elites pretend we're all equally loving to each other or all equally consumerist. The lies keep us placid and predictable. In a way, many of us are the lovers for commenting, which is not passive.

reply

I figured this would happen sooner or later. I'm a little surprised it hasn't happened before now. I've been on here for a long time now and I knew at some point they would deal with the trolls and losers by just shutting everything down. Kind of like throwing the baby out with the bath water. Some of the trolls were kind of funny at times and then there were some that were legitimately dangerous because they were unbalanced psychopaths. I'm not on facebook and don't plan to be on it because I just don't like it for one and second because I don't trust what they do with all the data that they mine from their users. They are somewhat KGB like and I don't want to be involved with that. I figure it will just be a matter of time before Youtube also shuts down its comments on videos. There have been some good topics and times here with different users. Sometimes the degenerates that invade and cause trouble for people have made me think that the whole thing isn't worth it but the good times have outweighed the bad over the years. I hope the IMDb will at least allow its registered users to still contribute to the biographical information or trivia sections on people and movies. If they disable that too then I can see IMDb really falling off the internet map.

reply

The trivia section is fine, but I've gotten far more information on here by discussing films, bits I didn't get etc with other users... And there's the humour, you don't get that in the trivia section... :(

reply

I was also primarily discussing this movie, Aliens and The Thing extensively on these boards, since 2004. This board in particular was one of my favorite places on the net, and really long standing for almost 15 years now.

Well... I need to save my board history locally now and move over to Reddit. So sad... I really can't find words.

I was looking back to see if you were looking back at me to see me looking back at you

Hey bluersun, I have a forum on my site, but no members. Mainly I use it for posting site updates. But the nice thing about it is members can embed images and video in their post. There's an Alien Franchise board there.

reply

Nice one, I'll have a proper look after work, cheers! :)

reply

One of the nicest things about the IMDB board system was its variety. Although Alien and Aliens are easily my two favorite movies of all time, I have also enjoyed discussing Red October (my username comes from that movie), The Terminator (at least until I encountered one particularly obnoxious poster over there), The Crow, Robin Hood and bunches of other movies as well as several actors. I even once got a private message from one of them named Charles Dennis. Even on boards where I mostly just lurk it has been interesting to read others' thoughts on lots of different subjects.

In the course of all these discussions I've "met" some really nice people (as well as some not so nice ones). That's what happens when you have a vast, open public forum. You take the good, you take the bad (ya take 'em both and there ya have The Facts of Life ). "Refugee" boards never last because they stagnate over time. They have narrower focus and limited exposure so they have less overall and less diverse membership than boards like this one. It's like living in a large metropolitan area as opposed to a small rural community. The rural town is a lot more restful and safer but much less stimulating.

I have been a board member here since 2006 and I'll be more than a little sad when this place closes down. Even though it has only been a small part of my life, it has been entertaining. I sincerely wish you all the best in other boards wherever y'all wind up but I just don't think I'll be following.

I can only conclude I'm paying off karma at a vastly accelerated rate.

reply

I'm not usually one to bitch about losing something I get for free but damn! It's too bad IMDb doesn't just have the message boards for Pro members who are willing to pay...that would surely reduce the troll horseshyt yet still show they appreciate the contributors who helped make the site what it is today. Ironically, Facebook has more political and stupid sh!t than I ever saw here! Someone please post an alternative forum/board site we can go to. Otherwise, you all take care and it was nice hangin' with you over the years. 

That's what I love about these high school girls, man...I get older, they stay the same age.

Message boards seem to be becoming a thing of the past. It seems like more are being shut down than are being started. It's not just the trolls that are the problem on most but also relentless spammers that post nothing but links to ads or web sites trying to sell you stuff that's either bootleg merchandise or infected with some sort of adware or spyware. It's like all these telemarketer calls that you get all hours of the day of someone trying to scam you. That's why if I don't know the number on my caller ID I don't answer the phone. At least IMDb was quick to get rid of spammers but they were really slow at getting rid of trolls or punks that went around threatening people or even cyber stalking. I doubt many of you remember the poster Grimmlock but I think he got banned from here and didn't deserve it. He took it to trolls all the time but they retaliated against him and not the trolls that were causing the trouble in the first place. He was a good poster around here who had a good knowledge of Alien and had sensible ideas. It was about that time that a lot of the original posters here started leaving.

I have to agree and it's sad. I see people on Facebook that barely speak to each other and it's usually in the form of quick quips or memes. Message boards favor a more thoughtful discussion of things and, unlike most social media these days, also seem to foster a sense of "community" that you don't get on the newer social media sites.

I can only conclude I'm paying off karma at a vastly accelerated rate.

reply

I've only seen on Facebook group that comes even close to the "community" found in the IMDb message boards.

A "Secret" group (meaning you cant even locate it in a search of facebook, invitation only), comprised of Active and Veteran military, family and associated friends, mostly military aviation and damned near everything from current events, military news, and funny cat memes discussed. Most members are as family though most have never met in person. We do have get togethers about twice a year on the east and west coasts.

But for the IMDb boards to be replaced by Facebook would require the creation of a facebook group for each and every film and for there to be members of each and every group.

Which is why fb is NOT a viable substitute.

I joined the Navy to see the world, only to discover the world is 2/3 water!

reply

That's not the only reason Facebook is an unsuitable replacement. I had a Facebook account once. I expected to keep up with family and old friends. What I got, instead, was an endless parade of "drama" (that didn't involve me at all) peppered with unsolicited friend requests from attention whores with no mutual friends and a seemingly endless string of game requests. My tolerance for bullsh!t has definite limits so I deleted my account there.

I can only conclude I'm paying off karma at a vastly accelerated rate.

reply

I'm not into conspiracies or wild speculation on things but I'm not too enamored about how so many websites now want to log into them through facebook. It's like facebook is becoming the internet itself. I've thought that at some point there will be this facebook backlash but so far that hasn't happened. At least not to any major degree. Now facebook membership has been somewhat stagnant for the past couple of years meaning that their rate of new memberships has slowed down but they aren't having any kind of exodus of members at the same time. People are so fickle and I figure that facebook's demise will come at some point. Instagram and snapchat are already stealing a lot of glory from them and even if twitter hasn't turned a profit yet it's still major competition. Something is going to come along that will offer things that facebook either won't or can't and that's when facebook tanks.

I guess this is going to sound like a rant and if it does so be it but I find it kind of disturbing about the number of people out there in the world that message boards is basically their sole way of having contact with people. It's not that they don't have people around them, it's just that they elevate the digital world over the real one. It's like watching a ground of teen sit there in a circle with their smart phones out and instead of actually talking to each other face to face they are sitting there texting to each other and they are only five feet away. I think that's one of the big reasons why so many teens today have absolutely no communication skills. Things like that make me worry about the future, not finding some strange signal on a distant planet. I'm off my soapbox for now.
