IMDB message boards RIP facebook group:
https://www.facebook.com/groups/1811856615806472/

The IMDB message boards are scheduled to close completely in about two weeks.

Discuss where to go for movie debate now?

reply

This is the single most retarded thing IMDb has done.

Facebook is not an alternative to the boards which are tailored to discussion of specific films and actors.

I know. This really sucks.

The "Main" Message boards can be shut down. The ones you get when you click on "messageboards" from the main page.

Those are just a cesspool of trolls. eapecially the "politics" board.

But the messageboards generated for individual films and actors, directors, ec... should be kept.

And a revamping of how IMDb deals with trolls and violators would keep the rest in order.

IMDb's explanation as to "why" they're shutting down is just a bullsh!t excuse for "we don't want to deal with it any more, too bad."

If they made the "ignore" feature act more like facebook's ignore/blocking feature would be a good start.

I have several nasty as all frak stalker trolls that my ignoring would do nothing to them. They're in it for the character assasination of me. I wont see what theyy write about me, but everyone else in the boards I frequent would still see what they say about me.

If it was like Facebook, not only would I not see their posts, they could not see mine either to enable them to stalk my postings. It would be as though I too have been ignored by them. Not just me ignoring them.

That one change along would guarantee a lot more would start using ignore and the remaining boards would be a much better place as the deliberate trolls started fetting banished into oblivion.

I agree with you. If you go on message boards for shows like The Walking Dead and Game of Thrones all you see is a bunch of ignorant nonsense. If you want have a serious conversation about either show you really have to do some digging and do that at your own peril. Putting an “ignore” feature on the message boards to cut down on a lot of it would be a good place to start. Why should true movie lovers like me and you lose the one good website we have for discussion because of a bunch of dicks with nothing better to do? I’ve been on this site for years. I am going to miss it.

The message boards do have an ignore feature. The problem is that it isn't robust enough to shut down the trolls.

For the casual peruser of the boards, who just browses and reads from time to time it works fine. Just throw the most repetitively annoying on ignore to cut out the noise and read the rest.

But for those that are regular and constant contributer to the boards who post daily, it isn't enough. because these people, especially those like myself who don't put up with BS from idiots, tend to attract stalker trolls out for character assassination. So long as the stalker trolls can see their targets posts, they'll keep posting. It isnt about their target seeing their post, its so that everyone else sees the nasty crap they post about their target. Just look at the vile nasty crap that targeted me on its own thread in this board. It wasnt about me seeing their posts, it was about trying to destroy me to others. The sort of ignore feature we have now doesn't work for that scenario.

When you ignore someone on facebook, not only do you not see their posts anymore.... the ignored person can no longer see your posts either. can no longer respond, search you out. find your posting history, nothing.

Take the little ignorant jackarse, "lrdcharlton" for example.
If I throw him on ignore now. He still stalks my posting history. He still replies with nasty ad hominems towards my posts. Everyone still sees his crap and I see that he has responded to me, I just dont see what it is he said. Everyone else does though.

With the FB ignore, lrdcharlton can no longer see my posts for him to even respond to. As far as he can determine, I am gone from IMDb. Without my posts for him to respond to, he eventually moves on.

With the worst of the trolls, they'll eventually end up in empty forums talking only to themselves and other trolls as every legit user has them ignored.

That WILL kill the trolling.

I'm actually convinced that trolling had relatively little to do with the decision and that marketing and message control are more important. Amazon owns the IMDB. The IMDB makes money from advertising and subscriptions to IMDB Pro. Message boards are an open forum to discuss films, often negatively as is the case with many new films and remakes.

By shutting down the message boards, the IMDB does reduce the cost of running the site. But more importantly it ends one of the ways in which potential moviegoers view negative impressions of upcoming films. For instance, the discussion for a movie like the recent Ghostbusters remake was almost overwhelmingly negative and potentially added to the studio's inability to market the film. Removing the boards allows the IMDB to sell their site to movie production companies as a more effective, and less negative, marketing tool for their product.

The message boards don't make money for the IMDB, even if we users enjoy them. But buy shutting down an avenue for criticism, especially in the critical run-up to release, the IMDB makes itself more valuable to its primary clients. Censorship as a marketing ploy.

it doesn't help that it's never been updated since i joined. most other forums you can post mindless memes (pictures in line) and automatically make links active. This one is primitive.

Well, I won't be going on Facebook for discussing movies...

IMDB was the best website for movie freaks. Every single movie, director, actor had it's separate message board. What will be the alternative? A classic forum? With stupid categories?

Fùck you IMDB.

Me neither. This site may be less advanced but I feel like that helps preserve my anonymity here. It's an important consideration.

As I mentioned on another thread, "refugee" boards, boards where people go when a larger place either shuts down or becomes too unpleasant, never last very long. They have limited membership and less exposure.

I think Sailor had it right, the boards are a "legacy" system they just don't want to deal with the upkeep any more.

*Edit* Confirmed. I found this a little while ago.

From the post by "Col Needham"

... the message boards are not a core function of IMDb. IMDb has over 250 million users per month and only the tiniest fraction of those visit the boards and even fewer post on the boards. The boards therefore make up an insignificant percentage of overall IMDb page views. It is difficult to specifically sell advertising against message board content for obvious reasons so the only ads which run there are low price run-of-site banners at the top/bottom of a subset of boards pages where we would typically only earn revenue if a customer clicks-through and signs up for whatever is being advertised. On the other hand, managing the boards and operating the technology behind them is disproportionately costly since the board systems are so old.

So, maybe it's just me but I think maybe we're wasting our time signing petitions.

I can only conclude I'm paying off karma at a vastly accelerated rate.

Just a heads-up - discussion is going on about this on IMDb itself with Col Needham's participation:

You can ask him questions here and give him feedback - I already did. There are already great arguments there to prove the value of the boards. Let's show him how important this truly is for us!
