Not that funny.

Even now that I'm older, more aware of humor encoded in dialogue and what not, I just don't find the movie all that funny.

It has some humorous moments in it, but it's not that funny.

reply

I agree..Dudley Moore becomes quite annoying at times as well

reply

Yeh, the whole falling down the hill, letting the bee get in his nose ... wow ... yuck. I mean I saw real comedies in the theatre and on TV with friends and family, and we laughed at those.

With this film you could hear the crickets chirp.

reply

Also agree. Even when it first came out, seemed more hype than humor

reply

Yeah, and I'm pretty sure that was intentional. I'm just not sure why this film was made at all. As beautiful as Bo Derek was (or is), she didn't carry the film. No one really did.

It was like a giant mid life crisis movie. As a boy with raging hormones I thought it was a cheap thrill, but as an adult ... I'm thinking it's not that good a film.

reply

I absolutely agree. I remember liking the film when I first saw it, it was huge, especially those damn cornrows Bo Derek wore.

Now I can't stand George or Bo and some of the references to the gay characters and homosexuality are pretty offensive.

How times have changed. I'd say for the better except.....

reply

Agreed. Blake Edwards thought he was making "edgy" movies late in life and forgot to put any real humor in them.

I only saw this once, many years ago, and hated it. Blake Edwards made two films which I really love (Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Days of Wine and Roses), two more which I like (A Shot in the Dark and Victor/Victoria) and quite a lot of mediocrities. Of those I’ve seen this is the bottom of the barrel.

Perhaps it's because I've seen this film so many times over the years from the time it was airing on HBO in the early 80's up to the present day, but I take a different stance on it than you people who don't find it funny. Believe me, I've seen bad Blake Edwards (That's Life and The Man Who Loved Women, for instance) but this isn't exactly in the same league. In fact, as I've entered middle age like its protagonist, I can recognize the truthfulness of it. There aren't many movies willing to explore male menopause. You certainly wouldn't see one nowadays. The topic is considered too downbeat. As for the comedy, Edwards in that era was moving away from pure slapstick and into a more adult-oriented sort of dramedy. I thought it worked for "10" and it was a huge hit in its day, certainly more so than any film he made in the 80's (including Victor/Victoria). And it was a breakthrough role for Dudley Moore, who gave a scene-stealing performance in 1978's 'Foul Play' and was destined for greater things. "10" proved he was an engaging and funny leading man which no doubt landed him his great role in "Arthur" a couple of years later. ("10" also proved he knew how to play a funny drunk.) Some people might be put off by the extended comic sequences such as the bee sting and the aftermath of George Webber's dental appointment, but those types of scenes can be expected in any Blake Edwards film as something that defines his sense of humor. The underrated "Skin Deep" from a decade later is filled with amusing set pieces of this sort. As for Bo Derek, I thought she did fine. She was probably the main reason so many men flocked to see this in '79. Edwards knows how to get a performance out of her even though it's apparent she's something of a novice when it comes to acting. And Dee Wallace gave a funny-sad performance in her minor role. In short, I think it's sad many people don't appreciate this film anymore as it has some really funny but truthful stuff in it.

Wow! I agree!

reply

LOL. You call me all sorts of names on here, but I do agree with your assessment of this film, and of both Dudley Moore's career and the career of Blake Edwards.

You agree to your own review? That's funny. But it's a good one, so I agree as well...

Thanks Pete314!

Did you not realize that was your own post?

I’ve done that myself more than once, though I haven’t gone as far as to agree with my own earlier post. I’m sure I will some day.

Regardless, this was exactly my own experience, too. I saw it on HBO in my teens but didn’t “get it” until I was pushing 40 myself.

Now I’m actually nostalgic for my 40s.

It's up on HBOMAX if you have it.

reply

Nah, it's hilarious.

reply

I agree

It is indeed a fun exploration of “male menopause”, similar to “Blame it on Rio”, (another under-appreciated gem).

I have yet to see Blame It On Rio. It got bad reviews upon release.
