Dudley at the Piano

I had seen an interview with Blake Edwards sometime back where he spoke about how they shot the scene at the bar with Dudley playing piano. Unlike most films where the music is added in post, they miked the piano and shot with a two cameras in one take.

Dudley Moore is an outstanding pianist and apparently left the crew somewhat speechless after the performance.

One take... not only a beautiful musical rendition but you really felt his character's pain and angst. Anyone who plays music knows what a cathartic experience it can be. Particularly on the piano.

Moore did a fantastic job.

It's a wonderful scene and brilliant performance by Dudley - thank you for sharing!

While it was obvious the music was not added in post, I did not know he did this scene in one take.

My dad was a wonderful pianist and loved that scene as well as the little "mini concert" he put on at his engagement party in Arthur.

Thanks for sharing that little bit.

Is very bad to steal Jobu's rum. Is very bad.

Oh how I wish I could get a recording of that piece. I found it on an album by Henry Mancini, and it's pretty and all, but... it's just not the same as I remember it being in the movie. Perhaps part of the reason it affected me so much was being able to watch him play it, knowing what his character is going through, and watching how Dee Wallace's character is so touched and moved by it. Oh man, now I have to go see if that scene is available on youtube...!

Well, considering one thing they saved production costs on was the soundtrack I can believe this. The movie is in mono, even on my blue ray copy. They felt it was fine as a comedy and didn't need an overpriced surround sound track. Don't really notice much deficiency as it's not about explosions and CGI.

The actor who played the reverend was also a pianist in his own right. (In the scene where he played and sang that God-awful song).

I am presently watching that Twilight Zone episode where Billy Mumy's character wishes people into the cornfield, and the same actor (Max Showalter) tickles the ivories in that episode. Likely his own playing we hear both in that episode and "10".
