Casting For This Show

Why wasn't Wayne Rogers cast in this show? I know he left M*A*S*H, but he's the only person who should've played Trapper John.

I think it was because mainly Trapper John M.D. was set in present time instead of the Korean War. Im pretty sure Wayne Rogers was doing House Calls right around the time Trapper John M.D. began.

So this show is set about 30 years after Trapper John left MASH? That would definitely necessitate a different actor; either that or a lot of makeup!

Yeah, Trapper John M.D. was set in the present time some 2 and half decades after the end of the Korean War.

Wayne Rogers is only 5 years younger than Pernel Roberts. The casting would have been fine.

The problem wasn't Wayne Rogers' age, it was the fact that he portrayed Trap as he appeared 25 years younger. It would not have worked just to throw a little grey hair on him and try to claim 25 years had passed.

Wayne Rodgers sure has aged well. He was in his early 40's when he left MASH, which means he is old enough to be a Korean war vet, but he didn't look like it. I hear he was offered the role as trapper john MD but turned it down. I agree it would have ben odd to see trapper again 25 years later looking only 5 years older.

reply

Yeah, Roberts just looked older. Until I read this, I assumed their age differences were much greater. However, Rogers still looked to close to his age when he was on MASH.

Technically, Elliot Gould should have been the first choice, since this show was "officially" an extension of the film, not the tv show.

Although, the fact that Timothy Busfield bore a noticeable resemblance to Rogers as opposed to Gould kind of raises continuity questions.
