When?

When did Audrey and Richard fall for each other?

Personally I don't think they fell for each other at the same time because initially I think they were just attracted to each other. I think that Richard fell in love with Audrey first, somewhere around the end of the first series and the beginning of the second series. However I think that Audrey fell for him towards the end of the second series as it is obvious in the last series that she loves him like crazy but in her own way because she has one-up him at every oportunity.

What do people think?

I'd been wondering about that myself. It's so hard to know, it's not like either of them really says anything to anyone about how they feel. As far as I can remember, it's only Mrs Pou who says anything straight out to either of them, & they both tell her to butt out - paraphrasing there, of course! However, I think you've got the timing right. In Series 2, at the New Years party (I think it's Episode 5), when Richard says to Audrey, "Let's drink to this year. And to us?", they exchange this smile, & I think by then they know something's going to happen.

One other thing I wondered was Audrey's change of heart through the three series. At the end of the very first episode she hints that she would marry Richard to get back to the Manor, then in the last episode she says that she WOULDN'T have married him while he had the Manor. What happened there? Was it just because she actually fell in love with him? I'd like to think so. And I'd also love to know why Richard never proposed. When I first watched it, there were so many times when I thought he'd say something & was frustrated when he didn't, particularly in Series 3, Episode 4, when he & Audrey are due to go on night duty guarding the bee-eater bird & he says it'll give them an opportunity to talk "about you and me". Then, presumably, he never said anything! Worked out for the best in the end, though.

I think they fell in love as a very gradual process. I don't know about the change of heart regarding the Manor. I think she wanted to be the sole owner. That's apparently the only reason she married Marton, her first cousin so she'd at least be a part owner.
Actually, Richard was on the verge of proposing several times but something always interrupted him, such as Brabinger coming into the room to announce something or various other interruptions. In the documentary included in the box set it's mentioned that they finally had to do something about getting married as they had kept the audience in suspense for too long.

I read that they have filmed an updated christmas special of To the Manor Born that is being shown on BBC One channel ... trying to find out if it will be shown in the US ... anyone have any idea or how to find out?

Great updated picture of Penelope Keith and Peter Bowles on http://www.bbc.co.uk/comedy/tothemanorborn/index.shtml

One thing that occurred to me, having rewatched the Christmas special, was that it was lovely to see Audrey & Richard "post-wedding" - you know, what they were like together, even though they spend most of the episode apart. It was great to see that the fighting was still going on, even though they're obviously still madly in love. The bit near the end where Audrey tells Marjorie about how she doesn't miss the Manor, she misses Richard - that was really an "aww" moment for me. Richard comes first, the Manor is second - hurray.

I doubt that the special will be available in the USA, or even released in Region I. You can buy a Region II DVD at:

As for the original topic, I believe that Audrey knew Richard wanted to marry her early in the series, but both knew that it was improper for him to ask unless she made it clear that she wanted him to, since she was old aristocracy and he was nouveau riche. After all, the main focus of this series was the interraction of the various social classes, and what happens when classes traditional lower in stature gain at least a temporary advantage. This is also why it was proper for Audrey to introduce the subject of marraige herself.

Oh, that's clever, I'd never thought of it in the class way. I'd always thought she was quite brave, proposing like that, although it was pretty obvious what the answer would be - I don't think I'd have the nerve to do it!
