Tory Propaganda

We were supposed to feel sorry for Audrey because she's lost her stately home. Yet in 1979 people all over Britain were losing their homes as the direct result of Tory policies. At least Audrey's still got a butler and a gardener. No wonder they loved this in America. It played up to the stereotypical view of the British as either toffs or serfs. And it wasn't particularly funny either.

Actually, To The Manor Born was loved in America because the dialogue was witty and Penelope Keith & Peter Bowles were the classiest couple to hit the tube since Steed & Mrs. Peel in The Avengers.

It was a show about an immigrant who bought a manor house from a member of the aristocracy. That's practically a Tory's nightmare.

Hmm, tell that to Benjamin Disraeli!

i don't think we were necessarily intended to sympathise with Audrey. rather we were meant to be amused by her snobbery, and her struggle to keep up appearances.

I prefer the old gentleman Tories like Audrey to the ivory Tower ideologues petty bourgeois penny pinchers and coffee morning gossips who.took over from them. The knights of the.shire would never have neglected our defences or come up with the Poll Tax.
