minor plot hole

I always wondered about this, when audrey looses the manor why didnt she just move in with marjory?? they have been friend since school and she seems to be with audrey a lot anyway.and since audrey would never associate with anybody lower than herself marjory must also have a large manor house.

Some people jut like having a place of their own. Audrey strikes me as one of those people.

Marjorie has equal social standing but is also broke

marjory does not have a large manor house as far as we know. They are from roughly the same sort of social background, they went to the same school etc. but that does not necesssarily mean they are rich. you can be upper class without being rich in England. having posh ancestors does not guarantee money.

It's called living in genteel poverty.

Audrey isn't destitute, she's an independent woman and she buys the cottage so she doesn't cut ties with the estate and she can also keep a close eye on how Richard is handling the manor, hence the constant use of binoculars watching what Richard is doing, lol.
Plus the location of the cottage is central to some of the episodes.

You're right but you've understated its importance by referring to it as a cottage. It was The Lodge, a building with a special connection to the big house since it was generally occupied by employees close to the family - gamekeeper, gardener and the like. It was for such reasons it overlooked the big house. An estate tenant would never have been permitted that.
