Building codes in the north east

I'm in the St. Louis area and I am consitaly surprised by the ridiculas codes in the North east. Just got done watching ask this old house...they were installing smoke alarms, no big deal right? WRONG!! Code now reqires the smoke alarms must be hard wired and "talk" to each other, if 1 goes off they all go off. So what used to be a simple job for the home owner is now a major deal. Most people would have to hire a electrican for what a thousand dollars.

These codes are national. Usually local regulations just refer to the codes which are maintained (and copyrighted) by the NFPA.
