Still no legitimate Space Battleship Yamato DVD set with subtitles?

Anyone know if there's a good set out there somewhere?

Last time I checked there was only an unauthorized knockoff set on eBay (with bad subtitles).

I'm personally close to some of the insiders on this matter, so this is how it breaks down: the reason they released the movies subtitled but not the series is because the Japanese branch of Voyager itself does not own the rights to the TV episodes any more. During one of several bankruptcies in the late '80s-early '90s, executive producer Yoshinobu Nishizaki sold the rights off to Bandai. After recovering financially, he regained the rights to the feature films, but Bandai retained the episode rights. The American incarnation of Voyager was sold off as its own company (it presently has something along the lines of four employees, tops) and really doesn't have the money to negotiate with Bandai for the series rights. Star Blazers is Voyager's sole product, and its most recent release of the series in the US was around eight years ago; its income must be near nil. Seeing how Nishizaki recently died in an accident, the possibility that Voyager Japan will ever regain the episode rights has become virtually nonexistent, though even that wouldn't have guaranteed an American release, seeing as the US arm is now an independent company with nearly no income and no ties to its former parent.

It's sad, but it's true that there may never be a legitimate US release of the Yamato series.

I've resigned myself to the fact there will never be a fully restored, jam-packed DVD set for Star Blazers. It's really too bad. It's something we may never see now that Nishizaki has died. I guess the crappy knock-off DVD set will have to do.

I don't see what's so "crappy" about the 'knock-off' dvd. The quality is good, and it's a chance to see this rare series in it's original, uncut form.
