Any help gratefully appreciated.

Thanks

With great difficulty...I've been trying for ages...never seems to pop up even on Ebay. Rare dvd were advertising copies a while back but adverse publicity put me off. If I find anything I'll let you know.

The release of the series was announced as "coming soon" on play.com quite a while ago. As time wnet by without further announcement, a few folks posted messages about it there wanting to know what was happening.

Well, nothing did happen and now it's not even listed there any more, so we may be in for quite a wait yet.

Thanks for this info joe - have just received my copy from there.

Tread carefully, because you tread on my dreams.

Hope you enjoy it as much as I have, I am nearly out of episodes and am stretching it out.
It's great to see a series where every other word does not start with F.

I've seen a couple of the Shoestring sets available from various sources on DVD and they seem to be the 'cut' versions of episodes shown on BBC1 and UKTV drama a few years back. Can't blame the suppliers...it must be years since these episodes were shown in full.

I contacted the BBC about the cuts...they said a few minutes were trimmed from each episode where necessary to make them suitable for afternoon viewing....it also made them fit the available timeslot quite handily !

UKTV Drama then seemed to show these trimmed versions (some were clumsily done), although they did show every episode....a couple hadn't been transmitted for over nearly 20 years due to 'rights' issues.

I got Shoestring on DVD from one of the suppliers mentioned in this thread, and the episodes appear to be cut, but the cuts aren't as damaging as some I've seen. I can live with it, though I'd love to see them in their entirety some day.

Was the "Toyah" episode one of the ones with rights issues? Music is often an issue nowadays (cf WKRP).

I actually got Shoestring by mistake. I thought I was ordering Spender, clicked one box off from where I was supposed to, and discovered something really cool. I wish all mistakes worked out that well. :-)

Glad the mistake worked out well...Shoestring is a personal favourite of mine. I bought Spender of the 'net too, and enjoyed it.

'Find the Lady' is the Toyah episode I think...I've bought a set of the DVDs from the internet and this episode is cut, coming in at between 47 and 48 minutes as I remember. I also have this episode on the WH Smith VHS cassette released in the early nineties and it runs to just over 50 minutes on that. The cuts are mostly minor stuff , but some episodes are worse affected. 'Private Ear' lost quite a bit of establishing story for instance. 'Uncertain Circle' lost a bit of the more violent scenes...maybe because the Beeb were broadcasting them in the early afternoon...some episodes lost a bit of the banter between Eddie and Erica...good fun, but not always vital to the plot.
I have VHS versions of most episodes taped from UK Gold (as was), again in the early nineties, and I suspect these are only trimmed a touch where the adverts were inserted...one day I'll dig 'em out and transfer them to DVD myself. The picture wasn't all that good though, and occasionally reverted to black and white.

I agree with you though - the versions available on the internet are good..and certainly better than nothing...the episodes currently being shown on the Alibi channel are the trimmed versions too. It seems unlikely that Shoestring will ever get a 'proper' release due to the much discussed and rather annoying issue of music rights.
