Elements ! ? ! ?

Excellent program, have them all on DVD so I'm not really knocking it but come on. Since when were either sapphire OR steel elements?

reply

Do you mean scienticully or as charecters?

If scientific it's true, Sapphire and Steel aren't elements, they're compunds, Sapphire of Carbon and Steel of Iron, but still, Carbon and Iron wouldn't have that ring to it would it?

As charecters, I don't think anyone's implying S&S are pieces used in jewlerry, I think it's just a term used to make them seem mysterious and powerful.

the opening provided SO much fertile ground for exploration... my mind explodes with the possibilities.... to bad it didn't continue, oh bugger.

Ticks Ticks thousands of ticks, and not one blessed TOCK among them!

reply

Sapphire and Steel are merely codenames based on their powers.

reply

I like to think of them as actually being manifestations of the compounds referred to above. But it doesn't matter too much.

Reading about it now I've realised all the mystery that seemed to surround it the time wasn't only due to my being too young to understand - it actually was just as I remembered it. One of the best offbeat series, downbeat and very cool.

I don't think P J Hammond knew this. But nevermind! I like to think that the codenames were chosen for Sapphire and Steel based on what their powers/personalities reminded people of.

I think they were really intended to be like something along the lines of items from the Periodic Table that we had to learn in the old days when I was at school (my science knowledge was and still is rubbish but I do remember things like lead and copper being on that list).

reply

I think we're meant to assume they're just codenames. But, yes, Carbon and Iron hardly has the same ring to it.

Silver also appeared in a few episodes, if my memory serves. :)

Lead and gold were element characters too.

I vaguely remember that Sapphire are crystals of Aluminium Oxide not carbon. This 'element' thing in the titles really annoyed the science nerd in me when I was 13 year old.

I haven't seen the show in years. It would certainly make a nice change to the endless music, talent, dancing shows that are broadcast ad nausium on UK tv these days.
