Albert Finney as Rumpole?

There was talk a year or two ago about Albert Finney assuming the role of Rumpole in a new series - Rumpole was supposed to be coming out of the hospital after a heart attack - nothing seems to have come of this so far. Anyone know anything?

Would to God my friends.
With Sir John in the afterlife I doubt it, but we can hope.

reply

Don't we have enough remakes and reboots already to last us well into the next millennium without another to clutter the air waves and movie screens?

reply

Well, sir I can definantly understand your viewpoint.
However, I do belive that the series could be performed by Mr. Finney as a tribute to both Sir John and Mr. Mckern

reply

Well, yes, but this would not be a remake or a reboot but a continuation of the Rumpole series -- except it would need to have a new Rumpole, a new Hilda, and you'd probably have to get a new Henry (unless Jonathan Coy is just itching to return to the role), etc., etc.

With a zillion television channels now, this is not a problem. Though if there are no unproduced Rumpole stories written by Mortimer, that might drop a fatal clod in the churn.

I have nothing but deep respect for the work of Albert Finney, but the whole Rumpole thing - comprising books {wonderful) and films {sublime}, is finished and done. What with the passing of J.M. & L.M., how or why would anyone want to go on with it? It happened at a period in our lives and should be cherished for what it is.

reply

Rumpole Reprised! What a wonderful thought. Sherlock Holmes and Miss Marple have had various actors portray them so why not our favorite old Bailey hack? I say more power to Albert Finney or anyone willing to undertake this task. If done right, it could be brillant.

reply

Albert Finney would make an excellent Rumpole. There is no reason this story should not go on. I hope the remainder of the cast can be filled with enough characters.

reply

Given the failure of so many recent reboots, I have mixed feelings. I adore Albert Finney, so maybe it could work, if the right person is chosen to write the adaptation.

I seem to recall talk round about 2004 of Jim Broadbent playing Rumpole. I guess Albert Finney took his place for the proposed new version.

reply

Interesting. Broadbent might be able to pull off that role, as well.
