Pilot movie?

The first 5 episodes of this series were originally made as a feature length film, which aired on prime time network TV once, then disappeared. (See the IMDB listing for "Flash Gordon: The Greatest Adventure of All") But when the movie was chopped up into individual episodes, they omitted a lot of material, including the entire prologue, which was set in Nazi Germany. Unfortunately, the movie is not included in the DVD set, and as far as I can tell, it has never been released on video. Does anyone have a copy of it?

I have a copy of this and there is more missing than the prologue- in particular, I really enjoy a scene later on where Thun (the lion man) and Flash share a quiet moment talking about Thun's homeland. It's a great movie with a slightly different progression of events than the series and well worth seeing on its own. Hopefully it will be released officially if the series sells well.

I think I remember a scene in the feature length version where Lion man discusses making love to a tiger woman.

Am I remembering it right?

I enjoyed the (tv series on) DVD. Even as a kid I thought most of filmmations work was repetitive assembly line junk- but THIS series was TOP NOTCH for saturday morning cartoons of that era. The quasi 3D flying ships- the AMAZINGLY detailed backgrounds, the rotoscoped acrobatics....

I would argue that THIS is better than Dinos live action picture- for a comics purist.

Is the feature version on ebay or anything?

I spotted that a lot of the running and fighting scenes kept getting recycled in multiple episodes ( Flash doing that "bring it on" thing with his fingers over and over!) but only an anal dork liek me would spot that!

Did the pilot movie end with a rooftop sword fight between Flash and Ming? I'm sure I remember this movie, but it was so long ago.

Ja, jeg er enig med dig Jan :)

But back to the english language: I also love this series (first season that is). Because it just so much science fiction and adventure. One of the highlights of 1970ties animation.

To get yout nostalgia going, then watch the intro from the series (very cool):

It was released on video a decade or so ago http://www.amazon.com/Flash-Gordon-Animated-VHS/dp/1566055067/ref=sr_1 _2?ie=UTF8&s=video&qid=1277087675&sr=1-2 I'm watching a copy of it at the moment. The box says its 30 minutes but it's at least 75, I didn't bother to time it thinking the box was correct.

All that VHS contains is the first three episodes edited together from the series. I own it. Flash Gordon: The Greatest Adventure of All is an actual movie that was made first, but only shown after the series had already aired. It starts off on Earth during WWII, introducing all characters and culminating in the escape from Earth amid a meteor shower aboard Zarkov's ship...the footage glimpsed in the opening credits of the series. Our main characters wear their Earth clothing through most of the film, becoming more and more tattered along the way. The scenes are in a different order from what they were in the series, and there is added footage of Zarkov working in Ming's lab, dressed in Mongo clothing. It is revealed that Ming is supplying Hitler's effort to dominate the world. Oh, and Ming is voiced by a different actor too, one who doesn't sound like Skeletor. This footage was taken and altered for the series, redressing our heroes and rearranging events to support weakly episodes. Much more material was added to replace material from the film that was deleted. The movie is wonderful, an alternate version of the series we are so familiar with. I have a bootleg DVD of it taken from an original VHS recording made back in 1982 when it originally aired. It is only decent quality, but the best that is available. Here are some pictures from the movie version...

Whose idea was it for the word "Lisp" to have an "S" in it?

reply

You can watch the whole thing on Youtube. If you look closely at the laser rifles, you can see that they have bolts, since they reused footage from earlier in the film, when Flash uses a rifle to drive off a monster, soon after crash landing on Mongo.
