First impressions.

keep in mind I only gave this series a go because I loved Dallas. Turns out I love KL even MORE! and I have only seen the first season so far. [I do know about the fates of most of the main people on the show thank to the episode synopses from wikipedia].

so what were your first impressions of all the people?

Sid: I love him! just what a neighbor should be.
Karen: Love her! just what a lady neighbor should be. [thought they should have had her had that baby, though.]
kids are cool, too although sometimes I wanted to slap Diana and cut Eric's hair.

Kenny: meh. he seemed cool but I had him pegged as a cheater from the get go.
Ginger: I liked her as a person and I felt sorry for her having to deal with Kenny's crap [and whatever he 'brought home'] but I have a hard time picturing her [her name mainly] as a kindergarten teacher. I am used to Ginger Grant from Gilligan's island so a Ginger Kindergarten teacher is a little weird.

Richard: I knew he was a flake and obnoxious in the first episode and when he had his money problems in the end of the first season I saw it coming. I can see good in him, though. he just needed some sort of therapy or something.
Laura: eh... I like her but she is just too pokey and timid with Richard.

and of course you have to love Gary and Val. I just wished val had a little more common sense and street smarts.

Laura becomes more assertive, especially when her marriage to Richard fails.

I liked Sid, but felt Karen worked better with Mack, her next husband.

Yes i to began watching because of my love for Dallas. I loved Sid too. After everything Val goes through, yes you do expect her to wise up but.......

Nice to see someone love the series right from the get go. The good news is that it only gets better; when you hit the super duper sweet spot of peak seasons 4 through 7 you'll just be like "Holy crap, this is the greatest show I've ever seen in my life."

LOL you're not alone there. Diana was very irritating.

Valene was dumbed down for KL. Check out her pre-KL episodes of Dallas - she is a spitfire.

She was more assertive, but still lost Lucy to the Ewings. When KL began, Val seemed more empowered because she was married to Gary, and she was the voice of reason until her breakdown in season 6. Examples of her strength include when Laura was raped, when she thought she might have had cancer, and when Diana took off with Chip and she supported Karen through that time. I think viewers enjoyed Val when she was fragile, because it enabled fans to root for her recovery. No one believed her when her babies were kidnapped or when Jill tried to kill her, for example. But she became a more sophisticated and mature woman by the time KL ended.

I think Frank did believe her about Jill. He probably found it suspicious when Jill was in the hospital waiting room, acting so cool after Val accused her to Gary. Most people would not act cool as a cucumber in the face of an attempted murder accusation. And he did tell Val she shouldn't worry about Jill, since she wasn't dumb enough to try anything again right after Val had accused her. And then he had Pat, who was working in the bank, look at Jill's account and discover she had taken out a big wad of cash right before her trip to San Francisco.

Yes he did. Frank was always one of my fave characters on the show. And I was pleased he believed Val. I also liked the scene where Frank breaks into Jill's flat after in incident where his daughter Julie fell off Gary's horse, after Jill cut the saddle. I know she meant that for Gary but Julie got caught in the cross fire which naturally made Frank angry. I always felt bad for Valene when her friends and family didn't believe her. First with the fact she knew her babies were still alive and with the Jill stuff. I wish they hadn't hooked Val up with Danny Waleska though and Gary with his ex. Sally's friend or something?

reply

I think the difference with Frank was not only being a former cop, but also he didn't really know Jill that well so he wouldn't automatically assume Jill would never do such a thing, unlike Gary or Mac or Karen, who up until now have known Jill only as a good person. He can say "Well, Val doesn't really sound crazy to me, so maybe Jill did try to kill her."
Danny's ex was actually named Amanda, although she was originally known as "Sally's friend." I remember thinking, "Can't we just get Gary & Val back together already?" Gary leaves Val for Abby. By the time he and Abby divorce, Val is married to Ben. By the time Ben disappears, Gary is with Jill. Jill kills herself, Gary is cleared, can we please get Gary, Val and the twins back together already? Nope, we have to deal with a season of Danny the psycho. And then when he FINALLY dies, Val gets a head injury, starts acting nuts, and postpones the remarriage to Gary until near the end of another season. 9 seasons apart!
Loved Frank's confrontation with Jill, threatening to snap her head off her scrawny little neck. Part of her day from hell. In between Val attacking her at her office and Gary showing up to tell her he hated her and would NEVER love her again. And Mac blowing her off when she called up saying Val wanted to kill her. I always thought all the Soap Opera characters dealing with obsessed would-be lovers who won't take "NO!" for an answer should try Gary's speech to Jill, about how he hated everything about her, even the way she chewed her food.

My favourite characters in Season 1 are Sid (by far, I love him), Laura and Ginger.

Gary, Richard, Kenny and Val follow closely. Like them all.

I find Karen a bit irritating. Over enthusiastic, intrusive, childish (like when she was jealous from Sid's ex-wife and put him to the test. Really? After all these years?)

I cant' stand Diana. Michael and Eric are cute and nice.

I watched the show a long time ago and I remember the plot after Season 1 vaguely. I remember I loved Abby (she's evil, I know, but I loved the character) and Mack.
