Why does Tom sawyers hair keep changing colour?

Something I've wondered since I first watched this series back in the 80's - Why does Sammy Snyders (Tom sawyers) hair keep changing colour throughout the episodes? It varies from dark chestnut brown to full on blonde. There's currently no trivia section, anyone know the reason?

Its possible that his hair just lightened in the summer sun as mine does. In winetertime its light brown and high summertime its a ligher blonde with parts that are almost white.

Mine does that too. Living near the coast I get blonde strands through it during summer, but his seemed like full on peroxide blonde
