I never got that vibe watching this show, to me none of the characters were racist, I always thought this was a fun, wholesome show to watch.
I wish people's mindset of today would be similar to what it was during the show's heyday.

You are right that a lot of leftists play the south for laughs as uneducated redneck fools. I'm not one of those leftists. I despise that thinking. I really do think we need to do something to help the south improve...I want all of America to be booming, not just the south. Our whole U.S. poor population needs to be better educated: blacks, whites, browns, reds, yellows.
Playing the south for laughs never appealed to me as someone who actually does care about the working poor. I honestly do believe the south could be so much better but it would take a lot of work and effort that no one seems to be willing to do.
The South is just fine. Not everyone wants to live in the middle of some high crime metropolis, and this Southern boy has a Ph.D. I've taken education as far as I can. However, I probably would have made more money over my lifetime if I just learned heating and air-conditioning.

All it takes now is to have a white cast. They could all be abolitionists and due to being white they would still be called racist.
The 80's were fun. I was just a kid when this was on and at no point did I think the boys were members of the KKK or attempting to cause a second civil war etc.
Never were. The Dukes opposed discrimination in any form.
