"Definitely Ambassadors. They had that section that jutted out in the middle of the front bumper."
So did Matadors, because Matadors and Ambassadors had the exact same body. The Ambassador had more upscale options. It's like, say, a 1969 Plymouth Belvedere, Satellite, Road Runner, and GTX. They all have the exact same body panels; the available options are the only difference.
The AMC cop cars used on The Dukes of Hazzard were Matadors. It's unlikely that any of them were Ambassadors, because the cop cars they used were usually, if not always, real retired cop cars that they bought at auctions. I don't know if the Ambassador was available with a police package or not, but Matadors definitely were, and were definitely more commonly used as police cars, because police cars didn't tend to have any upscale trim options; they had rubber or vinyl flooring instead of carpeting, bench seats, "dog dish" hubcaps, etc. Police package options focused on things that actually mattered, e.g., upgraded brakes, suspension, cooling system, drivetrain, etc.
