Does anyone know the name of the classical song that played during the opening credits?

I've been trying to find it for years...

Fortuna Imperatrix Mundi, or "O Fortuna" from Carmina Burana

If you mean the spooky, gibbering music just before the blinding flash in the title sequence, it's something by Gyorgy Ligeti, but I'm not sure what piece. This page thinks it might be "Lux Aeterna": http://www.fantasticplaces.com/jamesburke/burke_music_3.html

And "O Fortuna" does appear in a couple of episodes (I remember it in one section talking about the fall of the Roman Empire), but it's not the opening credits music.

It's not by Ligeti - it's taken from the "Sanctus" of Benjamin Britten's War Requiem. The words being sung are "Pleni sunt coeli et terra gloria Tua" ("The Heavens and Earth are full of Thy glory").
