I swear I saw the1979 pilot in a movie theatre

There's another thread on here about the mutant creatures in the burnt-out city, which scared the holy heck out of me at the time. I remember my brother being pissed at me for having to go with him. I was going to put it on my netflix, but I only see the tv show - not a movie/theatrical release version. Am I crazy? Does anyone else remember it in the theater?

reply

Ok, I did a bit more searching and found the answer under "Trivia" on this page for the pilot: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0077278/

"This was the pilot for the TV series that followed ("Buck Rogers in the 25th Century" (1979)). When no network chose to air it, the film debuted in theaters."

Now I will netflix the first disc and relive the soothing childhood horror... or I'll be disappointed at how bad and unscary it all seems to me now... sigh.

The pilot was shown in the theatres in the US as well, as I remember seeing this with "Infra-man" in the drive in theatre...

Yes, indeed it was shown theatrically in the US and I remember thinking how wonderfully silly it was, but how hot Erin Gray and Pamela Hensley looked.

Thanks to the internet, now it's much easier to insult people in other countries.

reply

I also saw it at a drive in theatre back in the day. I've had the hots for Pamela Hensley ever since.

reply

Yes it was shown in theaters.
I was the one who got IMDB to change the tag from TV back to Movie as it should be.

FYI, I was just at the IMDB site, and it looks like they're still labelling it a TV movie....

Check it out:

The reason that they label it as a TV movie is because of their rule that if a movie is filmed with the intention that it is to be shown on TV then it is considered a TV movie. It doesn't matter that it was shown in the theater before it was used as a TV pilot.

btw I still consider it a theatrical release since some stuff had to be cut to be made TV friendly.

Check out there rules here if you're interested:

Yes it was. And the very same thing for the same reason also happened to the Battlestar Galactica premier. It was released nationally and then 2 weeks later ABC aired it on t.v. I remember how cheated I felt spending $2.50(remember this was 1978 at a little locally owned single-screen theatre. Man those were the days!!!) at the theatre just to see it for free a few weeks later (albiet with commercials)

Actually, the BSG: TOS pilot was only released in theaters in Canada. I grew up in the US and I remember being envious that I didn't get to see it on a big screen...and in SENSURROUND! I'm a Canuck now...but way too late :-)

reply

Sorry. Incorrect. It most assuredly played in theaters in the US, Ohio in this case, since thats where I saw it and Battlestar Galactica first. Im getting the impression it didnt play in alot of cities.

I saw the feature versions of both the "Buck Rogers" pilot and the "Battlestar Galactica" pilot at the little local theater on main street in the little town in Kentucky that I grew up in. Same little theater in which I also saw "Star Wars", "Alien", and "Star Trek - The Motion Picture". Good times. I believe the building is now a furniture store.

I, too, saw the Battlestar pilot in Sensurround here in the United States; I saw it in both Florida and New York, and I want to say it was about the summer of 1979.

reply

i just picked up the whole series at walmarts for 19.95! well worth it.

reply

I have too seen it at the theaters my dad took me to go see it I thought I remember seeing a building exploding after buckrogers left earth. unless that might have been an advertising for another movie.

reply

Yeah, i saw this on the big screen in the UK, little local theatre, long gone now, killed by VHS craze. It was a double bill with Mission Galactica (the 2 part Pegasus episode). All the pilots for old shows turned up on the cinema in the UK, Battlestar, Buck Rogers, Spider Man (the Nicholas Hammond one) and The Incredible Hulk !

I saw it in a movie theater in Dobbs Ferry, New York, as a kid.

reply

Of course it played in the movies!

The opening credits had an extended scene of very attractive women hanging out and posing on a white set.

reply

I saw it as a movie on Long Island, NY as a kid in 1979.

I even remember the marquee and being excited about it.

reply

We saw it as a matinee at the Park East in Garden City Park. It's now a Charlie Brown's Steak House.
