Any chance this series ending up on Blu-Ray?
Just curious if anyone knows if both seasons of this series will end up on Blu-Ray (its available on DVD).

shareNo, it won't-the show would have to have its SFX remastered, for one, and I don't think that there's any real interest in this show for Universal to earmark the money to do that (for there to be supply, there has to be demand.) This show isn't as popular as Star Trek for anything other than a standard DVD.
shareI don't think effects weren't done on the video end of the post chain back then (like they were for Star Trek the Next Generation 10 years later). It seems like it was all done in 35mm, so a blu-ray release would simply mean re-transferring off the final film print (that was telecine 'd down to NTSC back then) just like any movie from the 70's or prior. It would be matted on the sides. Remember the first episode(s) were released theatrically as a feature film.
But I would buy this *beep* on blu-ray or HD download in an instant!
It is already on Blu Ray in Germany BUT it's still in standard definition!
I don't know, but I'm glad I got my DVD sets just in case they never appear again.
shareNever going to happen. Its to costly turning it in to HD, remaster it and release it on Blu-ray, plus there is zero chance that they will get the money back.
Its facing a serious problem, and that is the pretty abysmal second season, where they tried to turn the show in to Star Trek.
Yeah, the second season was really awful.
shareDon't know about it being released around the rest of the world, but today I just bought a Limited Edition Blu Ray box set with both series, extra features, and a double sided poster of Buck and Wilma (mmmmm, Wilma!) here in Australia. Haven't seen it out on display at my local chain store JB Hi-Fi before today, just found out it was only released 2 days ago. It says that it's been remastered, but it looks just like it did back in the late 70's - early 80's (yes, I'm that old!)......which doesn't bother me, as I get to see Erin Gray and Pamela Hensley in all their hotness!
shareAug. 26th on Amazon U.S. for 79.99 but says it is Region 2 Import!
shareJust buy a multi-region Blu-Ray player, or use a PlayStation III or IV (I've heard that they have multi-region capacities) or watch it on your computer's Blu-Ray drive (if your computer has one.)
shareOnline reviews say the discs are actually region free despite the region B label.
Apparently video quality is excellent considering the limitations of the production of the time.
Shame it's lax on extras, I've gathered both Gil and Erin liked their time on the show. Indeed, Gil was behind season 2's more serious take - season 1 is sweet innocent fun but season 2 is a LOT better overall than what people remember it as being. Shame it got canceled but in 1980 people were probably expecting more of season 1's style. The loss of Mel Blanc as Twiki pretty much sealed the deal, getting him back was too late. :(
Still $79.99.
Interesting. Would like to get this on bluray, but if it still looks the same as DVD, then it's probably not worth it. I would want to see real substantial remastering of the video as well as the audio. Not holding my breath though. For now, the DVD will gave to suffice.
shareJust checked, both seasons are on sale on German Amazon for 11,97€

shareIt's been released on blu-ray by Madman (Australia), the only real HD release so far, and it is region-free.
Do NOT buy the German release, it is just SD episodes stuck onto blu-rays for some reason.
The AU set can be bought online for about $55:

I'm watching the official limited edition 8 disc BLU RAY box set as I type this and it looks fantastic. It was produced in Australia but was very easily purchased domestically through Amazon. They play on U.S. players without issue.
shareI got mine some time back, and the show's never looked better. A fun TV series from our younger days
