piracy or not ?
What do you people think about downloadable versions of this anime ? There are original dvd versions on sale (in japanese and french) , so wouldnt it be piracy to download the series from the internet ? Any ideas ?

first of all, you are right there are original DVDs in japanes of this anime but they don't have subtitles (except for cantonese, philipine, and a few other asian languages). That eliminates a huge fan base from other contries. for example (i'm mexican) and i found out a few months ago that ROV was aired in mexidco and other latin american contries IN SPANISH but there are no origial dvds in spanish so i but a fan creation on dvd (the video was taken form some original dvds and the audio from some vhs recordings of the series from when it was aired in the 70s or 80s). I first watched the seires in japanes and i bought it out of pure curiosity (oly becuase im into this type of anime). I didn't know waht to expect but i fell in love with ROV. The dvds that i bought in your opinion would be piracy. but how else was i suposed to ever watch it and understand it? The reason I don't think it would be is becuase they have english subtitles and it is a fan creation. yes the audio and video was taken from original dvds im sure BUT there is no version of ROV dvds that includes english subs so techically its not taking credit for someone elses work or making money of of it. I love ROV and if there were original DVDs that had these features or were in a language that i understood the DEFINATELY i would buy the original dvds. If the creators care if people are doing this then its time for them to wake up and smell the coffee and start making these dvds. There are petions everywhere on the web to get companies to do this and they won't so "WHATEVER". lol. don't get me wrong, i've seen several dubs in difrent languages and none of them beats the origal japanese audio. I can't uderstand it at all but it sounds beautiful and is by far the best. I could be just trying to clear my concience for buying the dvds but really its just my opinion.

Meanwhile, I became so obsessed with finding original(english subtitled) versions of ROV that I actually wrote directly to the company and learnt that english subtitled DVDs are on the way- but in some countries only. I do not know which regions yet, but I am waiting for an answer. I think I will wait for sometime, and if they release anything in my region, I ll go for it, otherwise I am planning to buy the fan-made ones, like you.
sharethats awsome. i thought that was never gonna happen. if they do this i'm sure that it would be in region 1 since its in the u.s. allought other countries like england (in erope) would be region 2. we'll see what happens. Hey, since you were actually able to write to the actuall company and they gave you that info. By any chance do you think you would be able to write to them again and see if they have any rights to the background music of the series. As you may know, some of us fans are really into it and unfortuantely the soundtrack released doesn't include a lot of the music shown in the anime. mostly classical music pieces but some others as well. Or even just try to find out if that music is available anywhere else. I can understand that perhaps they could not get licences to release the clasical music but i allways wondered if the credits at the end of each episode tells the music used or anything like that. If you could find out for us it would be great. anyway back to the dvds, i hope they release boxsets or the entire series all at once because i hate when they only realese 3 or 4 episodes per dvd cuz its a lto more expensive to complete the series this way. :)
shareHey, by the way, the french people have it all. Thank God i speak French fluently, now i have the whole Collection of Lady Oscar here with me. The french dubbing is so much better, and they get the anime movies faster than a lot of countries. They have lots of other ones too, that's why France is also called the 'Anime-obsessed country'. They already had their first japanese anime from Japan since the '70s. Well. I guess the americans have to wait for a very long time to get the coolest anime ever. And by the way, the English dubbing of some animes are so bad that i want to puke...i think it is better to watch it in Japanese with English subtitles. But in french it is so much better.
shareVery, very true. a little offensive but true, the english dubbing is terrible for most anime series. for that matter, i cant even think of one that has been done well and without being wrecked by ridiculous censoring.
sharedubs for animes such as Boogiepop Phantom, Kino no Tabi, Haibane Renmei, Irresponsible Captain Tylor were decent. But I agree most of the dubs are mediocre but necessary if you want to focus on the picture and not be distracted by subtitles.
But I'd like to listen to the recent Gonzo title "Count of Monte Christo" in French.
