The Show's Ending

How exactly did this show end? (I'd watch it for myself if the show ever came on anymore.)

Thanks!

The show ended quite abruptly. There was not any kind of a series finale episode that brought intelligent closure to the show. Carroll O'Connor wanted to have a series finale but CBS refused to let him film that finale. O'Connor always resented CBS after that and vowed to never work with that network again. However, in the mid-1990's, O'Connor's new show IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT was moved from NBC over to CBS.

CBS has always treated their huge stars that made them truckloads of cash, like they treated Carroll O'Connor! I have always resented the fact that they did not let him do a wrap up as well, plus the show was still in the top 20!!
I always loved this show and never missed one.
RIP Carroll O'Connor, still miss him.

It was cancelled in 1983. The network just felt the show was getting old and needed new stuff. It would've been nice to have some sort of send-off but network people don't care much.
