Hays and Pescow lack of chemistry

I remember watching this series back in 79/80. My sister and I both felt Hays didn't seem to be in love with Pescow despite the fact they were playing newlyweds. Does anyone remember this? I thought Pescow seemed very much in love, but Hays seemed reticent somehow (even in love scenes). Maybe he just wasn't wild about the part - or the show itself? (It was a rather mediocre sitcom - with Doris Roberts being the only truly funny character).
