I agree. I just bought the DVD of this film last week and it blew me away. It reminded me a lot of the miniseries Shogun, only without any white characters. Probably because it came out around the same time. Not to mention, legends like Sonny Chiba and Toshiro Mifune star in this and it also features a young Hiroyuki Sanada, who was Chiba's acting protege and went on to start in The Last Samurai and Twilight Samurai......................
"What's this?? One bastard goes in, another one comes out!"
I thought it was pretty cool, however it's not quite as good as Kurosawa's works.
shareI just saw it on IFC yesterday. I was expecting a lot of clothes line flapping sound effects etc. What I got was an unexpected classic. I looked at the guide and it had 3 stars. They were well deserved. The intrigue is what carried this movie more than the action. I give it a 9. And I got the bonus of seeing the birth of the one eyed Jubei.

Greetings,
Need I say more? You are remembered.
Low rating is because when it comes to samurai flicks, majority of western viewers come to expect certain things. Lots of dramatic one on one, one on many. Dizzying sword slashes and blood.
They just want the cool samurai ninja action and don't care much about the plot.
This isn't an action film. In fact this movie is more of a historical drama with a bit of action sprinkled here and there. Like Braveheart.
It has a 7.1 as of now. Granted, I'd much prefer a 7.4, but the former is quite generous enough, I suppose.
