Am I the only one who finds it really racist?

I dont think people would be happy if I decided to make films where the one rule is that EVERY SINGLE PERSON in the film HAD to be white!
There are dozens of films that seem to follow The Wiz's rule, and I feel pretty offended by it all. Its almost like the makers seems to be saying black people can only enjoy films with a black cast. We are not a different species!

When I first saw this movie back in 1999 or 2000 I was about 17 and I didn't think nothing of this movie. It was like watching The Wizard of Oz. I didn't understand why one movie consisted of mostly blacks and the other mostly whites. Both versions are my favorite.

This was the argument by the NAACP for the past 50 years. The only difference is that they have argued on behalf of "colored people".

All races feel they should be more promenant in movies. The truth is, as long as people live in racial groups, movies will be made about racial groups. How can you be true to a story if you MUST put other races in the plot? Would "The Wiz" or "The Wizard Of Oz" been better with multi-racial casts? No, the ONLY difference would be is that there wouldn't be anybody complaining of racism.

In my opinion, most racism (not all) is the way YOU perceive it. I live in an ALL white town, but the sherriff is black. He was under investigation because of some stupid demographics report that (of course) showed he was not pulling over or arresting any blacks (duh!). The state goverment wanted to make sure he was not being racist.

You see racism because you see only blacks in "The Wiz". Do you see racism in "Desperate Housewives"? No, because it is a show about white suburban women.

They are stories, plain and simple. Don't put an entire race down because you don't like they way they are told. That makes YOU the racist.

To the orignal poster:

Many of the actors/actresses were mixed - and besides, even you are mixed with other things besides white. Latino is not white - asian is not white - german is not white - No one is white anymore - and no one is black either. Research what you say before you offend people and cause even more war between fellow movie lovers. Dude - we are all just people.

Guess you never saw the Judy Garland movie, huh?

Don't eva let nobody tell you you ain't strong enough

No, but try to realize the difference in culture and people according to race. The Wiz is meant to reflect a specific African American culture that would be inappropriate for a Caucasian cast wouldn't be able to reflect like this cast did. It would be like performing The Lion King, which is based on African culture with Swahili lyrics, using a Canadian cast.

The fact is that there will always be those few parts meant for an African American actor or a Caucasian actor or even an Asian actor. But don't worry, theatrical productions will usually accept a white actor.

^ "...all the costumes were ghetto and falling apart. insinuating blacks are ghetto and poor!"
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Emerald City sequence was virtual fashion parade of top 5th Avenue designers of the '70s....hardly "poor, falling apart, and ghetto."

I think the idea was to convey that the Emerald City's inhabitants represented those who HAD achieved wealth and status, and that these pursuits were ultimately hollow and meaningless. Note their obsession with media, and the changing of color schemes at the unpredictable behest of an unseen, all-powerful voice from above.

You're the "got to be kidding" troll, right?

Sheesh. Blacks were so excluded from film to the extent that they hired White actors to portray us in blackface. To this day, the rule is that White characters lead while the Black character is the sidekick or the White character's object of pity and saving.

Stop making a fool out of yourself on these Boards. I hope you've grown up and learned the ways of the world in the two years since you posted.
