WTW remake

My friends and I are remaking Within The Woods for the film's 25th anniversary. Nothing ambitious, just a couple of kids making a fan movie.
Check out the news site at http://www.withinthewoods.blogspot.com

As for the people that think remakes are bad, I mostly agree. Psycho was a shot for shot copy, Texas Chainsaw was so-so, Dawn of the Dead was more Yawn of the Dead and so on. Good remakes do exist, though, like The Blob, Night of the Living Dead and Scarface,(to name a few...) made by talented people dedicated to the genre.
Let's hope WTW fits in the middle, at the very least.

I'm open to any criticism, ideas and just plain conversation.
JC

P.S. I do not strive to surpass Sam Raimi's work in any way, but just to pay him homage.

let ye remember these words-

thou shalt not screw up

thou shalt not blablabla

Good luck, though. And remember to make it your own, instead of following the script word for word. Add your own twist.

reply

Thanks for the kind words.

As for the twist, a differnent ending is in the cards...

It will be posted on the internet as of Halloween.
We will release a DVD containing additionnal footage
but it will only cost the price of the disc and the case
which should be around 10$ can. Of course, it is much more
reasonable than another fan "film", S.I.C.K. which retails
for around 35$ can...

P.S. Yes it's true that DePalma's Scarface is more of a
movie by itself than a remake of the 30's one... sorry about
that... And please, for god's sake, no rapper remake of it...

reply

I'm open to watching anything someone might cook up, but I was wondering what format it was to be shot on?

reply

Unfortunately, it is shot on video. We are trying to get a film camera next year for our next horror project, an indie splatstick fest intitled Dead Can Dance. It should be finished in fall '05 or early '06. For now, we are more concentrating on shooting and completing WTW for the 23rd of October. Thanks for the support. Be sure to check on the website occasionaly. Most of the time, it's just opinion polls, but once in a while, we have important info.

We will soon release screenshots and I was wondering how you could make a info page on Imdb... anyone can help me on that?

reply

Just check out this handy form: http://www.imdb.com/updates?update=title

reply

"Be sure to check on the website occasionaly."

What website?

Where are you shooting this?

reply

The website is mentioned in the top post

reply

Its good to know that the world is not yet devoid of pessimistic bastards like the one posting above me.

I felt that the film should be honored for it's 25th anniversary ( It was released in '79 not '78 as IMDB says...) and since it's not looking like a DVD release will be out while were alive, I figured it deserved an update. As for it being shot for shot, I assure you this is not Gus Van Sant's Psycho. The screenplay for our version is twice as long, so expect some differences.
Not enough to escape the main plot, but at least there to give the film a breath of fresh air. As for the lawsuits, I assume Sam Raimi will understand this is an homage. If not, we'll deal with the legal problems.

A teaser trailer should be out soon on the website. http://brucelives.skyblog.com

Can I write the script.

reply

Sorry, the screenplay has already been written, but send me your work anyways, were always looking for good scripts. We are open to anything.
(script-wise, of course)

Hey, I plan on doing one a while back but never got to it. What camera do you plan on using?

Like was said before, if you were just going to watch this yourselves, show to a few friends, cool, but making a remake of someone else's copyrighted material and selling it as your own? VERY not cool. Just find someway to contact Sam Raimi, via email, snailmail, phone, whatever. I'm sure he will say go ahead, no problem, but you NEED to at least tell him that you are using his legally OWNED and COPYRIGHTED material before doing anything, especially selling it for profit!

reply

I'd love to but I have no idea how to contact him. Somebody can help me with this? I did write to Bruce Campbell, but alas, no reply. We did get a lot of support from Tom Sullivan, though, whom I met in person at the ED musical July 15th. Anyways, if anyone can help me contact Mr.Raimi for copyright issues, I'd very much appreciate it. Please E-mail it to me at [email protected].

reply

Yeah Yeah. No Offense At All, But This Is A Pretty Bad Idea...Like Some Other People Have Mentioned; If The Soul Purpose Is To Show It To Friends And Family, Awsome. But If You Plan On Taking A Movie That Has Already Been Established And Sell It...BAD IDEA. It's Copy Written....To Copy A Movie To A Blank Tape And Profit Off It Can Cost You 5 Years In Prison And/Or $250,000, I'd Imagine This Falls Under The Same Scenerio. I'm Not Trying To Bash You Guys, It Seems Pretty Cool And I'm Really Interested In Seeing It, But Hows About Just Making A Website You Can Download It From? I Don't Know If Raimi Would Like The Idea...Maybe He Would Enjoy The Fact That He Has Inspired Someone To Make Movies, But On The Other Hand, He's Stated Many, MANY Times He Wants "Within The Woods" To Be Left In The Past And Does Not Ever Want It Revisited.

Cheers, Good Luck.

If you watch the Uk boxed set of the evil Dead movies they say on one of the documentaries that they cant ever show it within the woods publicy because "unforseen legal reasons". Also its not copywrighted because the soundtrack isnt theyrs. And im sure Sam will send you to court for a fan movie of one of his pieces.Heck they did exactly the same as kids two

Have you started filming yet? Me and some friends are trying to put together a little gory (and slightly goofy) horror movie. Weve almost finished a script and wanna start filming it as and when we can. So as you seem to be a little ahead of me, do u have any tips for me on the actual film making side of things? ie. Gore effects (i think were gona need the most help on this side of things) or anything that may be helpful to a guy in the same boat as you

Looking forward to see ur film - gona kep an eye out for more news. R ya definately putting it up on the internet to download?

reply

Still no sign of the movie and now your website link has gone. What's happening?

Ah, the brave, the proud, who hype the hell out of their projects yet to come to fruition. "B-b-b-b-but it'll definitely be happening soon, in the meantime let me heap praise on my good intentions and non-contacts with Bruce Campbell"

Year and a half goes by.

I assure you the "filmmaker" who hasn't posted in forever is A) in hiding from embarassment or B) due to turn up at any time writing "I've just been busy with this thing called LIFE, give me a break, it will still happen"

LOL

Then there's C) "It was finished ages ago" but that's usually followed by no proof whatsoever.

Dumbass.

reply

Well hi again gang,
I've just been busy with this thing called LIFE, give me a break, it will still happen. Well no, but I did get a letter from Sam Raimi's attorneys about selling the film on the internet...(hey look what happens...) and I'm currently working on other projects, because, as was mentionned earlier, it has been two years, and without stroking myself too much, I don't believe I'm a one trick pony.

The new website is www.whisperpictures.net. You still can't order it for legal issues but it will be on the net eventually. (and I really hope you'll fall for it this time too...) But seriously, it was completed in Nov. 04, lasts about 39 mins. and was made with the support and tips from Tom Sullivan, on details and whatnot from the original.

Thanks to all of you out there for keeping this post alive for two years, especially to those with kind words.

reply

Great amateur film Jerome.

People here just can't appreciate hommages. Everybody calm die, it's for fun and entertainment. And by the way, Raimi don't have any right sover his film, since he took the music without asking for the rights, he can't sue or anything.

I respect Raimi a lot, but this film is as ordinary as any other student film, it's just fun to see where they start and Bruce younger. Because, visually, the film sucks and no comment on the sound... but I like it.

Inspiring short film. Now that guy makes 200 millions $ films. Amazing.

reply

Maybe we'll make as much one day, lol.
