Do not understand ending?

I recently watched A Wedding (twice) and still do not understand the ending. Does the butler and one of the guests run off in the bride and grooms M-B, only to perish in an accident? What is all that about when the father of the groom is mumbling to the dead Lillian Gish? What was the arrangement he was refering too, and why did he run away with his brother? Was Geraldine Chaplin a frustrated lesbian? This was a wandering movie with a wire thin plot, the ending cryptic at best IMHO. Can anyone shed some light on what took place at the very ending? I must admit after two viewings I still just don't get it!

i haven't seen the movie in a while, but i can answer one question for you. the people who died in the car accident were the bride and groom's exboyfriend and girlfriend.

i don't know if you have ever seen any other films made by robert altman, but he was known for films that are not spelled out for audiences. he liked to make you work. he was also known for his strange endings. he was often known for saying that the only true ending is death and that is the only ending he knew. so, his endings were often just abrupt. also, plot is never important in an almost film and most of them don't even have one, a wedding included. what is important are character interactions and the mood the movie gives you.

he's made some movies i love and some that i hate. he is definitely an acquired taste.

Regarding Robert Altman films, I really like both "Gosford Park" and "Nashville". This movie started out well, but ended up being kind of disappointing, unfortunately.

Actually, it's all explained. The groom's father Luigi was a busboy when he met his future wife in a restaurant in Italy. Lillian Gish allowed him to come to America and marry her daughter as long as he didn't divulge his background or allow any of his family to visit. When she passed away he realised he was free and took off with his brother.
