Why this movie doesn't work.

I guess the character is suppose to be either 14 or 18 year old. It would make great sense that it's shocking behavior from a 14 year old. An 18 year old would be just another lifetime-network-movie. But Isabelle Huppert was 23/24 and when she puts on all her makeup, her look was pushing 30.

All the time she's interacting with her parents, I'm thinking;
"Why doesn't she just move out?"
"How old is she Exactly?", and
"Just how many times did she get held back in school."

Part of the film was that she conned others into thinking she was older, so if the 23-30 transformation worked for you, the point was made. I agree that the age issue is rather hazy since she doesn't go to school or work, but that adds to the bizarreness her family

I'm just copying this from Wikipedia (take it with a grain of salt)

"Violette Nozière is a 1978 French crime film directed by Claude Chabrol and starring Isabelle Huppert and Stéphane Audran. The film, based on a true French murder case in 1934, is about a fourteen-year-old girl named Violette and her encounters with a number of older men."

I'm reminded of Jodie Foster role in "Taxi Driver". I think the point was she's supposed to be underage <16, and dressed up to be a girl in her early 20s (not 30ish).

According to this source, Violette was 18 when she poisoned her parents.
