The ONLY scene that made me laugh...

Was when Chong finds out Cheech took a bunch of acid and Chong starts laughing like a moron and Cheech says "What do you mean uhuhuhuhuhuh(Imitating moron laugh with his iconic voice)?"

Also, shortly after when the cop comes up to the car and after some talking the cop says something like "Who is this?" and Cheech says "Who is this is?"

Hahaha, other than that though, the movie hardly got a smile out of me, and I was stoned.

sorry to hear that you have no sense of humor.

I saw this flick in 1978 when it was released. The laughs were so loud it was hard to hear the next line. We had to see it again to hear what we missed. I just watched again for the untold time, and it still cracks me up like the first time. We actually saw it at a drive-in. This was the first viewing for most of the kids there. You could hear the laughs from the other cars. It was and still is one of the funniest pictures I've seen. I am glad that I was the first generation to see this classic. As for most of their other films? Eh.
Kinda grabs you by the boo-boo doesn't it?

reply

I agree with it being one of the funniest. It is in my top 5 favorite comedies and I didn't get to see it until around the early 90's on vhs. It would have been great to have been old enough to see it when first released.

I just love this little comedy gem Nan. It is silly and could even be considered jevenile humor for men who haven't grown up yet; but there is so much charm to be had. It is also consistent with it's flow and humor. The other C&C movies were a little strange and uneven in parts, like they were just a series of skits for the most part. UP IN SMOKE pushes all the right buttons as a comedy for me and is hilarious. It's like it's heart was in the right place.

I would even say that THINGS ARE TOUGH ALL OVER-82', is more consistently funny than the other 3 C&C stoner outings that were directed by Tommy Chong and that one gets forgotten or neglected. I even think THE CORSICAN BROTHERS-84', directed by Tommy Chong is funnier than Next Movie, Nice Dreams and Still Smokin. I also love YELLOWBEARD-83', but that one has a great cast of classic comedians and Chong is hilarious in this as El Nebuloso. Cheech is just his sniveling little sidekick here.

You mean to say The Ajax Lady didn't make you laugh???

She is a serious contender for funniest 45 second performance ever!

I always look forward to that part Mr H, when the Ajax lady makes her appearance. I wonder if she just ad-libbed the contorted expressions here, or if she was asked to pull those certain faces in that sequence?

All very desperate until the final “battle of the bands” scene. The lyrics to their songs are funny, especially the cross-dressing one!
Cheech actually looks hot in his tutu and I can’t but help laugh at Stacy Keech and his 3 incompetent cops, when he says “admit it you are stoned”
