I've lived in NYC my whole life (I'm 62 now) and I recall the city before it's great fall (the late 60's) and lived through its rebirth.
You people are exaggerating all of it. It was bad, but not NEARLY as bad as many of you make it seem in the 70's and 80's. Not NEARLY.
Plus, it was affordable. You could take your family to a freakin' baseball game without having to sell your car.
A decent seat at the opera or Broadway was actually possible! Concerts, live music everywhere, a lot of it free.
Now, you've got to pay, what, 20 bucks to get into MOMA??? Are you *beep* me?
If you were smart, and stayed out of the subways after 2 am, and in particularly "bad" areas, (we know what that means) you had no reason to worry, and I and my friends NEVER did. We had a great time.
However, I will say that NYC BEFORE the sixties, was FAR better than that. Wow.
