I can't believe the Japanese film industry, having seen Star Wars, seen the new technology for special effects, having seen the high production values, would shoot this thing, and not simply scratch their heads and say "Gosh, why does our film look like s__t?"

I really can't stomach this thing.

This movie was released months before Star Wars hit Japan. It was successful enough to get a TV series shortly afterwards.

Then why does it say 1978 next to the title?

It was released AFTER Star Wars, not before.
