I am watching it on DVD right now, as I write this. Unfortunately, it came in a collection with 40 other films by Alfred Hitchcock! Obviously someone made a mistake. It appears to be along the lines of other David Warner films of the era, 'Time After Time' or 'S.O.S. Titanic'. Not bad, but not what I wanted. lol FuturePrimitive666.

Looks like you got the same Dvd as I am watching I was expecting to see the original masterpiece not the 70's Robert Powell movie which I have seen before LOL

I would prefer to get this version to the original "masterpiece" that bore no resemblance to Buchan's excellent book and no resemblance to a great film in my opinion.

I can't believe I am one of the only people on IMDB to prefer this version.

Hitch's film is definitely better.

Really? Hitchcock is a very overrated director. Yes, he was a capable director that made some good popcorn flicks, but he is no more deserving of his reputation than Powell and Pressburger, John Huston or any other director from the same eras. And his version of 'The Thirty-Nine Steps' was one of his worst films; a boring, illogical waste of time. A complete bastardization of an infinitely better story.

Definitely more well-known. Yes. Definetely more dated. Yes. Definitely more overrated. Yes. Definitely better. Not on your life.

People usually only like the Hitchcock version because it is by Hitchcock and the populace is spoon-fed the idea that he was the greatest director, which he clearly wasn't (and I am not saying this out of hate, he directed many films I like, some of which are favourites, such as 'Rebecca'... infact I like most of his films) but the truth is that his version of 'The 39 Steps' wasn't very good. Not because it was a bad adaptation but because it was a weak film with very silly plot elements. I'd argue that it was his worst film.

The 78 version is at least fun and features the best Hannay. It is also by a very underrated director who never got the breaks that Hitchcock and many other lucky directors got.

Thank you for this website. I'd been looking for the 1978 copy as a present to my husband and now, thanks to you, I'm able to get it for him for Christmas.

I saw this version in the theater originally. I'm trying to find it too.
