Why was this on Turner 'Classic' Movies?

Ok, Donna Summer was truly wonderful singing the 1978 Academy Award winning song "Last Dance."
Suffered through the rest of this movie so I could enjoy the Commodores.
I thought this movie was lousy. Any thoughts?

I suffered through it to hear Donna Summer at the end. I had always heard about this movie but never seen it.

I guess they are playing with "Classic" fast and loose over at TCM!

Seriously, I think it was Motown tribute night or something and they did not have much to choose from.

It was dreadful, painful, horrible to sit through (especially because I am old enough to remember those days) so depressing as hell.

Hey, some of those older b/w films may look "classic", but are just as dreary--no, more dreary--than TGIF. They may be included because they contain a brief appearance by someone who turned out to be a big star, or some other significance.

I think having an Oscar-winning song certainly qualifies--in fact RO gave a pretty good explanation as to why they were showing it before the film rolled.

I also thought it was interesting seeing Berlin's Terri Nunn--who went on to sing an Oscar winning song herself*--as a teenager.

Well said, Clothes - Off!

I'm a big fan of this movie. It's just pure fun for me and I love watching the DVD on a Friday evening with a cocktail.

RO does explain why this movie is being shown on TCM. It does have to do with their Motown Productions theme.

RO uses the word "artifact" which is a very good description.

No, this movie is not a "classic" in the traditional sense.

But, it does reflect a time and culture that came and went.Whether you loved it or hated it, it existed.

I loved watching Terri Nunn as a teeny bopper and Donna Summer shines when she sings Last Dance which went appropriate with the feel of the movie.

So very true. That word "classic" always riles the purists, but this film is truly one for the time capsule because it embodies a spirit and an era that were relatively short-lived. And this film also featured folks like Debra Winger, Jeff Goldblum and Terri Nunn (she takes my breath away) who would become big stars in the '80s.

This film may not be a "classic" in the classic sense (whatever that is), but it is important historically. I don't have cable, so I don't get TCM, but I'm guessing this film is a lot better and more entertaining than most of the stuff it airs.

Disagree about the movie. I thought it was fantastic because of all the fun characters involved and I love Donna Summer!
TCM made a wise choice.

And, I might add, they certainly have a better idea of what "classic" is than AMC! Ick.

I thought it was a fun movie. I remember when it came out, everybody (my crowd) couldn't wait to see it, we were excited!! I remember the disco days fondly, so it was good for me. Yes, not truly a classic TCM-style, but a classic of its type (if that made sense).

TCM airs a wide variety of films, including some "underground" ones, everything from "Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill" to "Shanks", from "Bloody Birthday" to "Wanda". In contrast, "TGIF" is mainstream. Consider the future stars in it! That alone makes it worthy of showing on TCM. And, has been pointed out, it won an Oscar!

I love that this channel offers such a broad choice of genres and types of films. They do not exhibit snobbism. I've seen ultra-low-budget works letterboxed and treated with the same respect as one would expect with what some might consider "real" classics. They definitely are not "stuffy" and selecting films each month; there's a generous mixture throughout the year. I welcome the wealth of movies that are shown and look forward to more obscure films showing up.

Don't forget, movies like Village of the Giants are also on TCM. I think it's mostly about the movies being old. I love TCM, though.
