Why the £62,000?

I didn't understand the reason for them taking an exact amount of money each time, and leaving anything more. Can someone explain it?

They are looking to take the pound sterling equivalent of $100,000 on each occasion. As the exchange rate changes, so the sterling amount they need to steal changes, but they apparently have a rule that any excess over the equivalent of $100,000 is abandoned. Might just be an agreement amongst themselves.

Possibly it's the maximum allowance for bringing in cash allowed by Maltese customs?

As the Maltese Government didn't care how the blagger's earned their money as long as it wasn't on their patch it would have made sense to bring the money in legitimately & declare it via customs rather than smuggle it in and risk committing offences in Malta, where they were legit.
