Was Superman Returns a bad idea or

Just bad timing? Should it have been a sequel to Superman II? Some good actors but some poor casting, too.

reply

I hated it and would have rather had a reboot instead.

It was a good idea (semi sequel to SII/Donnerverse so to retain JW score, brando, crystal krypton/fortress, Reeve style superman) but the story wasnt great (too much a replay of STM ), not enough action (needed a supervillain like brainac or the return of Zod - Terence Stamp/Jude Law), the kid was a bad idea (he got Lois pregnant then erased her mind?), the suit was like a scuba suit and too dark (should've looked similar to the original suit: colours, \S/ etc), the film itself was very 'sepia/retro' looking (instead of a colourful comic book Americana look like the Reeve films) and Lois was totally miscast (amusing to think Parker Posey was in the film and is like a Margot Kidder type actress)

reply

After Batman V Superman and Superman 3, this is my 3rd favorite Superman movie

reply

Agreed. Posey would had been perfect casting as Lois Lane. Hell, James Marsden would had been a vast improvement as Superman. Let's face it, Brandon Routh only got the part because he looked like Christopher Reeve.

reply

I suppose you could say it was. The thing is, what made 1 and 2 so charming was lost in Superman Returns. Brandon Routh gave it a shot - Chris Reeve was better. Lex Luthor was funny in the first two - played by Gene Hackman. Lex is a pure psychopath in SR. I didn't think the "Superman's child" story arc was necessary. I didn't care for Kate Bosworth as Lois Lane. At that point in time I think probably Sandra Bullock - or maybe Courtney Cox would have been better. The CGI was lame, too. Bunch of bad stuff in SR - so yeah, I guess it was a bad idea.

reply

Bullock was too big a name back then and Cox wouldve been deemed too old. as would Bullock. (both were attached to Superman Lives/Reborn in late 90s along with likes of Linda Fiorentino)

reply

Yeah I can see that - who would you have gone with for Lois Lane? I'm thinking (in 2006) you could probably go with Natalie Portman. Or even Amy Adams. SHe was just getting started in 2006. She probably would have done better with the role in 2006 than she did with Snyder and Cavill in 2016 and 2017. The last name I'm coming up with is Rachel McAdams. She may also have worked for Lois Lane at that time.

reply

I probably would have gone with Zooey Deschanel.

reply

Good call, she was about 25-26 at the time, same age as Routh. SHes got the right look and flakiness for sure. Yeah, that's a good call - she'd have been just right for that role, at that time.

reply

It was a bad idea, badly executed.
