I've not seen it, but as it made an appearence on [u]www.tv.cream.org[/url]'s Top 100 films, now I'm very intrigued.

Here's what those splendid chaps had to say about it:

"We said this list would avoid the ironic or kitsch choice, but we're taking the piss here, right? Well, no. Honest. Admittedly this moneygrubbing Brent Walker fluff is generally regarded as a low period for all concerned, a tacky adaptation of a tackier book, an "errodick drama" that's about as errodick as a Hollyoaks omnibus. Despite all that, this slight tale of (strangely high-gloss) low-rent cockney gigolo and all-round Adrian Mills-haired "handsome bastard" Oliver Tobias becoming entangled in the (strangely low-rent) high-gloss West End world of jet-setting disco empress Joan Collins, leading to, well, nothing much to be honest, will hook you to the last. A wealth of period detail helps, obviously - from the snooker halls to the "debauched" disco scenes to the infamous Parisian lido complete with cockatoo and rubber plant, this is a museum of seventies transatlantic aspirational glamour in itself, before you even get as far as the ace Quantum Jump-featuring soundtrack (and yes, even in the West End's most glamourous nightspot, they still all sit on the floor for that rowing boat dance). Whatever, trust us - within twenty minutes you'll have forgotten to scoff at Sister Jackie's risque dialogue ("Does this give you a hardon?" inquires a slow-dancing Joan - answers on a Barclaycard, please) and start wallowing in its unabashed Clairol chutzpah. A weirdly life-affirming experience, even (especially) if you've never picked up a bonkbuster in your life. In it goes."

It seems it's one of those titles you can pick up at a bargain price. I'll add it to my ever growing DVD list.

Beyond trashy, THE STUD is indeed a film to be cherished. However, if you're going to add it to your DVD list, you will be sorely disappointed: there is no DVD out there to be had...at least not yet.

All you'll find if you go a-hunting is a rather badly transferred Thorn/EMI VHS tape (now out of print) on which the sound drops-out from time to time. And for shame! It's the *beep* dialogue that makes this utter garbage so enjoyable.

WHEN, oh WHEN will the distributors come to their senses and release this camp travesty to DVD in pristine condition (the way it deserves to be seen)??? Certainly, THE STUD must be released together with the THE BITCH in a "bow-wow" boxed set tied with a red satin ribbon (perhaps including a complimentary dog-biscuit).

Don't these idiot distributors understand we are DYING to give them our money for these ludicrous treasures???

(*sigh*)...

Nope, clearly I am not.

Yes, indeed. I stand corrected. A boxed-set containing THE STUD and THE BITCH was, ironically, *just* released to Region 1 DVD this month. How weird that I got it in my craw to start squawking about this so recently...(maybe I have a sixth sense about these things? If so, THE LONELY LADY can't be far behind...one can only hope!).

On its own, THE STUD appears in-stock at Amazon as well as other vendors, while THE BITCH (on its own, apart from the boxed-set) seems currently to be a pre-order. I went ahead and ordered the boxed-set from DeepDiscountDVD (free shipping) for the everyday low bargain price of US$12.

I was totally blindsighted. This DVD release literally came out of nowhere.

That there was no pre-release fanfare about THE STUD and THE BITCH on any of the DVD news sites to which I subscribe is a trifle suspicious. Any of these DVD watchdogs would have leapt on news of a Region 1 broadcast of these two Joan Collins trash masterpieces.

Probably means the distributor is a very small company, possibly a "new kid on the block".

Sure enough, Trinity Home Entertainment (http://www.trinityvideo.tv/), the distribution company (out of Westlake Village, CA USA -- ironically, the Los Angeles suburb where I grew up during my teen years) possesses a modest catalog of titles; I couldn't find mention of how long they've been in the biz. Happily for me (maybe you too?), they have also released CRUCIBLE OF HORROR with Michael Gough and Yvonne Mitchell, another of my favorite guilty pleasures.

We can only hope that Trinity Home Entertainment works with decent source material on all their releases (fingers -- and legs! -- crossed). Of particular concern to me regarding THE STUD is the sound, which was disastrously bad on Thorn EMI's VHS release (some dialog was utterly inaudible).

Netflix managed to get wind of the releases; THE STUD, THE BITCH, and CRUCIBLE OF HORROR are all available titles (though the "wait times" for these titles vary considerably).

Anyhow, as news spreads reviews will no doubt turn up on various DVD news sites, and I'll be curious to read what the experts have to say about transfer quality, sound, etc. In the meantime, I'll be scrutinizing what I receive in the mail (and possibly posting a comment here).

So how do these look and sound on Region 1 dvd? Anybody got them yet? Thanks for any info!

reply

My box-set arrived from DeepDiscountDvd without delay (and free shipping, too). Considering the set cost me only $12 this is an incredible bargain! The films look absolutely fine, although they ARE full-frame masters made, most likely, off the same video elements the VHS tapes were made years ago (just guessing, but probably true).

THE STUD is a bit grainier than THE BITCH, but that's probably because the film elements were grainier. The sound on THE STUD is a vast improvement over the THORN EMI videocassettes which suffered from sound "drop out" in scenes with soft-spoken dialogue. Even still, however, the sound is a problem issue for THE STUD with disco scenes wrenched-up super-high and quiet scenes a bit too quiet (you'll still be jockeying the remote to find the right volume level for this film, but at least the quietest dialogue is still audible).

Both films look great (THE BITCH sounds fine, btw). ANYone who likes to indulge in this sort of trash (and we know who we are, don't we?) need have no reservations about shelling out for this boxed set AT ONCE!

I have just ordered the boxed set (at £5.95) and although I've never seen them, I can't wait to finally watch them.

Also, is it me, or is Joan Collins STILL hot???

I put off and put off and put off (yes, I WAS put off by all the LOUSY reviews the movie garnered!) buying the movie, and then Amazon.com offered me a deal: "The Stud" and "The Bitch" in a package deal for $19.99. SOLD! Well, I just watched "The Stud," last night, and I was pleasantly surprised at how GOOD it actually is!!! Oh, it HAS its problems, most notably with production values.
Fontaine (Joan Collins) keeps telling Tony that the music in the disco is too loud, AND IT IS! However, the sound man on the picture did a LOUSY job, because everyone sounds like they are whispering. I turned the volume up as loud as it would go, and I just barely heard Joan drop her two F-Bombs. Her "Am I giving you a hard-on, darling" line IS a CLASSIC! In addition, she tells her female confidant about some guy who likes to have his "cock sucked."
Look, the guy who directed this flick (Quentin Masters?) was in WAY OVER HIS HEAD! According to imdb.com, he directed only four pictures in his whole life, and NONE since the early '80's. Yes, "The Stud" could've been a much, much different picture in the able hands of another director. The soundtrack is not too bad, though nowhere near as good as "Saturday Night Fever." Interesting, that the leading man in BOTH pictures ("The Stud" and "Saturday Night Fever") is named "Tony." Nudity? AMPLE! Joan Collins, at 45 years of age, is a work of art! I'd recommend THIS movie, and I think I just DID!

Been ages since I saw this piece of trash on the Playboy channel. After much fiddling with the cable box and fine tuner, the channel came in relatively clear, and I'm not sure it was worth it.

Joan Collins was the hot name on Dynasty at the time, and I'm guessing Hugh Hefner wanted to capitalize on her re-found success. Even with raging hormones I didn't see much sex appeal in this sex film. My buddy on the other hand pointed out all of the "skin" shots he could see. Well, that and his half brother was heavily into porn. Go figure.

I can't remember much of the movie itself. It was sleaze, even for sleaze, and it was cheap sleazy sleaze too boot.

I mean, what can you say about a film trying to create success from two sisters collaborating? A couple of the girls in the supporting roles were kind of cute ... beyond that, this film isn't worth the celluloid it was shot on.

Still, I'd be willing to splurge on a DVD just to trek down memory lane ... maybe not

She joined Dynasty several years later as a result of this film partly. Film showed the.life I wish I'd led!

From a woman's point of view, it's probably the ultimate cult classic; for once a beautiful man was on display for us ladies to enjoy, and the heroine was powerful--I know, she got her power from marrying rich and a little bit from modeling, but whoa that woman had swagger!:) Considering all the cult and B movies that had slut, whore or hooker in the title, we finally get a stud!:)

Feminism is the "radical belief" that women are people, and should be paid and treated equally.

reply

So it's ok to see a man get treated like a piece of meat, used and thrown away by powerful, frankly disgusting women, but you have a problem with films that are sexist against women? I thought how the guy got treated in this movie was pretty vile.

A very interesting story of the London nightlife and a slight class warfare subtext. In my opinion a classic. 👍🙌
