What gadget is she assembling near the start of the movie?

At about 17.27 into the movie, she is seated at her table in her apartment and is assembling some sort of gadget. It seems to have an aerial like a walky-talky, but I can't work out what it is. Can anyone tell me what it is that she's assembling?
