DVD Package Artwork

The DVD package artwork for The Silent Partner is poor. It is not at all indicative of the true plot of the movie. It shows three apparent robbers, walking very much like the gang from Ocean's Eleven. And if you look at the money depicted on the cover, it's American currency. Very odd for a movie that takes place in Canada. All in all a shoddy effort for a great movie.

reply

Yes the cover art was very puzzling. Also, if you notice the small picture of Plummer, he is standing in front of the vault. That never happened in the movie. Anyway the DVD is kind of a dissappointment. There are no special features at all. This movie is worthy of some audio commentary or at least a theatrical trailer. I'm grateful that it finally came out on DVD but it deserved better than this.

reply

THERE'S ALSO A BIG MISTAKE . SUSANNAH YORK'S NAME IS MISSPELLED ON THE COVER ART.NEVER HEAR OF SUZANNE YORK.

reply

I agree with falloutboy73. What a letdown. Such a great film should have had something, a trailer if anything. It's an underrated gem and not that many people have heard of it so that may be the reason for the lack of extras. I just watched it again last night. I haven't seen it in years and it hooked me in again!

reply

Quit yet complaining people, at least it's on DVD finally!!!!

reply

Just chiming in here.

The DVD packaging is retarded. This is The Silent Partner, not Reservoir Dogs - LOL.

That said, I agree: WHO CARES. At least it's finally out on DVD and I personally thought the pic quality was (surprisingly) excellent!

Nice to see so many other fans of this little gem of a film here on this board!

Is this DVD available in the UK yet?

reply

I'm not sure. I ordered mine from Barnes and Noble. You should probably check Amazon. If not I'm sure that there are Region 2 bootlegs available from ebay. Considering the lack of extras on the official DVD a bootleg would not be that much of a downgrade.

reply

I concur. The DVD box artwork is indeed terrible. The packaging makes this film seem like some hip post-modern crime pic, which it most definitely is not. Still, at least it's a nice quality widescreen presentation.

Don't expect much and you will never be disappointed.

reply

Speaking of widescreen, mine was not widescreen even though the box said it was. I don't mind because I don't have a widescreen TV, but I'm confused. Are there some DVDs that "adjust" the picture for a sqaure tv?

reply

I think the reasoning behind the hipster artwork is because Lionsgate wants to attract Tarantino's fanbase. Clearly the marekting department did not bother to watch the movie. I looked at the cover art and wondered myself why American currency was depicted when the film took place in Canada? I was in grade school when this movie was out and I knew that much. Sorry folks, art work is not populated by a staff of movie fans. It is a solid and entertaining movie, but a lousy DVD. At least the transfer is nice though.

reply

The DVD cover artwork totally SUX; it looks like some sort of RESERVOIR DOGS left over art! And the extras? Totally non existant. But let me tell you one thing: I've been looking to buy this movie on DVD for over 10 years and I'm certainly glad it's availble now and at a reasonable price. The movie transfer is more than decent and the sound is ok. Sure, a movie this good deserves much better, but at least it's on DVD!!! Look how many other GREAT films are still without DVD treatment (i.e. Ken Russell's THE DEVILS!), so to have this one on DVD, even with its bargain production qualities, is a blessing.

Stay Punk!

reply

I would say in general, 90% of the cover art on DVD boxes SUCKS!

I was only fifteen when this came out but as I recall the small newspaper ads (one and two column) featured a shot of Christopher Plummer during the police lineup. He was wearing a black shirt (t-shirt?) and this allowed the artists to put his head on a black background making it appear as if it was floating - possibly an arch reference to the infamous aquarium scene.

The VHS box image reference below is kinda funny given that "Partner" was marketed (quite appropriately) as a psychological thriller.

On an historical note, "Silent Partner" played on a double bill throughout Los Angeles with Roy Scheider's fine film "The Last Embrace" - an excellent twofer back then.

I think it was done to trick people into thinking this is a lighthearted "Ocean's Eleven" type film. Plus, Elliot Gould appears in BOTH films, making the connection even MORE obvious. However, someone doesn't get their head sawed off in "Eleven", so that might put off the casual viewer from enjoying this great movie.

reply

That is one brutal scene, no doubt.

reply

I have to be honest...when I first saw the film (about 15-20 years ago), that scene shocked the hell out of me! The LAST thing I expected from a movie with John Candy and the dude from Sound Of Music in it!!!! By the way, even in drag, Plummer was still badass. One of his most underrated performances.

reply

Totally agree. Pure slime he was... and friggin' brilliant at it.

Yes, this current artwork sucks. As i recall, the ads for this movie at the time of it's release only featured a shot of Christopher Plummer's eyes staring through the mailbox and the title underneath. Try as I may I can't find that image anywhere, although both the movie poster and soundtrack album feature it.

(Trivia note: Oscar Peterson and Christopher Plummer were old high-school friends.)

reply

By any chance can you tell what the text reads above his eyes on that poster? I can't quite make it out to read it.

Wait a minute... who am I here?

reply

Yeah, it's pretty blurry, but what I could make out, combined with my less than reliable memory, suggests that it was a line from the movie, which accompanied the shot, to the effect of " Some night when you come home, I'll be on the other side of this door, and that's the night you'll wish you'd never been born."

If you watch the movie, you can get the exact wording.

reply

totally inappropriate artwork.
This film cries out for a decent DVD release and potential rediscovery

reply

Showing my age, but I can remember this being released on very early home rental video in the UK. Even now, 30+ years later, I remember it as it was so scary. Just a totally black cover and then the 'letter box' open in the middle, with Plummer's eyes looking through (as in the movie) and text set below it, verbatim quoting what Plummer says to Gould about 'one night you'll get home and I'll be inside....'

"Someone has been tampering with Hank's memories."

reply

Hey, DBloodnok: AWESOME signature, just wanted to say.

Also, I have no idea why I can manage to make it out now (eyes getting better with age?? I doubt it - lol - strange...) but, looking at that poster again, now I can read the text.

It reads:

"One night when you come home
you'll find me inside waiting
and that will be the night
you'll wish you'd never been born..."

Yeas that letterbox scene is the one I remember watching on the old VHS.
