Is this the greatest martial arts movie ?

Well it blew me away when I watched it in 1985 at the age of 14.I could clearly see it was something special

I don't think there is a thing like The Greatest Martial Arts Movie as such. But this one comes close.
My personal G.M.A.M's are Iron Monkey [1993] and Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. But the oldschool flix like this one and Drunken Master are pretty awesome too. :-)

reply

I agree. It is one of the finest (original) martial arts movie.

not even close

I watched MK and 5DV again and venoms is NOWHERE as good as Master Killer

reply

No, it's not the greatest, but it's not far off.

The greatest is The Prodigal Son, followed by Dirty Ho.

Prodigal Son and Warriors Two are pretty damn amazing
Top 5 in no particular order:

The 36th Chamber of Shaolin
The Five Deadly Venoms ( Venom Mob )
Heroes of the East ( Gordon Liu )
Warriors Two ( Sammo Hung and a guy named Cassanova... )
Prodigal Son ( Yuen Biao )

No matter how good our kung-fu is, it will never defeat guns.

Your top 5 is impressive. Although I'm not a fan of Five Venoms and am shocked you placed Prodigal Son below that movie. Lam Ching Ying not only showcases some great Wing chun but puts on a great performance.

It was not in order...

Watch "I P " 1

IMO it is not the best, but it is damn good.

I think it has the most satisfying ending of almost any martial arts film ever made.

One Armed Swordsman is great, Eight Diagram Pole Fighter also excellent.

The majority of my favorite martial art films come from the Shaw Brothers catalogue.

This small list includes, but not limited to:
(Some might be under different titles)

The Avenging Eagle (1978)
The Challenge 1976 aka Challenge of the Masters
The Chinatown Kid
Clan Of The White Lotus (1980)
Crippled Avengers aka Return of the Five Deadly Venoms (which is very misleading because although this film has all the same actors from Venoms it is NOT a sequel or have anything at all to do with Venoms.)

Duel of the Iron Fists with David Chiang and Ti Lung
Deadly Mantis aka Shaolin Mantis
The Kid With The Golden Arms (1979)
Invincible Shaolin
The 5 Deadly Venoms
The Five Element Ninjas
The Five Shaolin Masters (1974)
The Flag of Iron (1980)
Legendary Weapons of China or Kungfu (1982)
The Magnificent Ruffians 1979 aka The Destroyers
Heroes of the East aka Shaolin Challenges Ninja
A Man Called Hero 1999 with Trung Hoa Anh Hùng - Lồng Tiếng
Shaolin Master Killer
Shaolin Rescuers (1979)
Ten Tigers Of Kwangtung (1980)
Three Evil Masters
Two Champions Of Shaolin

Bruce Lee films
- Fists of Fury
- Way of the Dragon (with Chuck Norris)
- Enter the Dragon

This is the greatest fighter training movie of all time. I would think Bruce Lee has the greatest martial arts movie.

This one is really good... but the best is Fist Of Legend (in Cantonese with English subtitles)
