I am a huge Burt fan and I am also a Gen Xer. My YOB is 1967. I have never quite understood this movie. I guess it's a generation gap and you had to have "been there" to get this one.

No, it's a really bad movie that has some zealot fans, which I do not comprehend.
share1970's were a weird time. The boomers got a little older and there was a good deal of people searching for meaning. Many turned their back on religion, but needed purpose.
A lot of new faddish systems of beliefs took hold.
This is the only movie that I can think of that really took a comic view of that fad and made it so central part of the story.
